LegoHeli's Real Aircraft Thread

Recommended Posts

Welcome to LegoHeli's Real Aircraft Thread. Here you will find releases of Kerbal copies of real aircraft, all using nothing but stock parts. Part clipping is, however, used. Used a lot. In fact used so much it's almost too much. Most will be military, but a civilian aircraft or two may sneak their way in.

All aircraft are designed to resemble visually - flight characteristics may vary (!!!!). Remember that most jet fighters since the 1960s have had flight computers to control them - this is because designing aircraft to be unstable from the beginning (or tail-heavy) makes them more maneuverable. Therefore, turn SAS on, even if it is not visible, all aircraft carry the avionics pack. I fly with a stick, and I strongly recommend you do so too!

Please de-activate gimbal on aircraft that does not have it in real life. Trust me, the F-16AFTI, for instance, is uncontrollable with gimbal on!

Aircraft may not be strutless, but struts are as hidden as possible unless they serve an aesthetic purpose.

Common readme!

All links direct to mediafire downloads. Craft files clogging up Kerbal Space Port annoy me, so I won't contribute to that.

Install by drag-dropping files to YourKSPFolder\Ships\SPH unless anything else is specified.

McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II

g1yFdu2l.jpg

Copy of the legendary Vietnam-era carrier jet. Flies OK, but is a tad more maneuverable than the original. Beware of tail strikes. I have not tried to land this on a carrier in-game yet.

General Dynamics F-16A Fighting Falcon

4AJEyRWl.jpg

The NATO workhorse fighter. Is somewhat heavier to control than the original is, but flies rather well. The range is fairly decent too.

NASA Dryden F-16 AFTI

LFUP488l.jpg

INSANELY MANEUVERABLE. Which is what it is supposed to be, but there can be too much of a good thing. Handle with care, and do NOT turn on fine controls. You will spin out of control instantly. This aircraft can perform kulbit, cobra and many other great maneuvers without losing control, so try it!

Northrop Grumman Global Hawk

C13o9aUl.png

The first UAV of the thread. Is controlled by a probe, and does carry batteries, but will not be able to re-activate after extended periods of stading around. Be careful when taking off; the aircraft has landing gear behind the centre of mass and is thus hard to get airborne, but it does fly rather well.

SAAB J-35 Draken

oxeFWxil.png

The very first double delta wing aircraft. It flies rather nicely, but is heavy on the controls and will, like the real thing, pop to extreme AoA if provoked.

SAAB J-37 Viggen

CseMVN5l.jpg

The brutal Viggen. Flies like a dream and looks the part as well!

SAAB JAS-39C Gripen

Hc9nrZrl.jpg

Swedish Eurocanard. This aircraft does fly, but is very AoA-happy. Treat it like driving a Dodge Viper - careful in the corners, but don't be afraid to push it!

Lockheed U-2A Dragon Lady

QsDZqIUl.png

You'll need to keep your driving skills up to get this thing in the air. It flies fine, but it takes off like an albatross - if you don't know what I mean, refer to

. I suggest using it with the fixed camera mod for spying on that pesky KSC2 ;)

North American X-15A

8NnWxTQl.png

The first rocket plane of this series! Like the original, it is heavy on its controls and throttleable. Although the real one was launched off a B-52, this one is just stuck on a launch clamp - be sure to throttle up before staging!

I say, they are quite nice. Although in my opinion the X-26 looks strangely like the Su-47. Any idea if you'll make some heavy metal (large aircraft)?

Indeed I did use quite a lot of part clipping to build my X-29. There wasn't any real option to achieve that design without it.

And it flies like a dream. It flies stable without SAS but it reacts a bit fast to the controls. SAS damps this and makes it a lot more friendly.

I've made an MD-83 and Boeing 737, as well as an ugly, but extremely well-flying copy of the cancelled Sukhoi-Gulfstream supersonic business jet. A few Russian fighters as well. I'll post them here once I get some screenshots; KSP takes forever to load!

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
