Can I swap pods? merge rocket designs?

When building a rocket it always requires a starting pod, is there a way to change out that starting pod with another? Say I have a rocket design that using Command Pod Mk1-2 but now I want to swap it with say a Probodobodyne OKTO2, is there a way to do that? Is there a way to merge rocket designs such that I can build several rockets and several types of lander and them merge them together at will?

You can not change the root part of any build. But with a mod like Subassembly Saver / Loader you can save pieces of your designs allowing you to load them again in a fresh build with a different root part.

The only way to swap a command module currently is via editing the craft file.

That mod needs to become vanilla. I mean it just makes no sense not to have it.

Thanks alot! I was thinking my head off how to add satellite as payload for another ship. This should definitely be a vanilla part of the game!

I`d like to be able to launch more than 3 kerbals into space on one ship.

I found a mod for that while browsing the space port after I first purchased this game. Party Starter harmlessly explodes when activated and fills all empty seats.

also search from Crew Manifest on the space port. it lets you do a few more things than the party starter (which is excellent for filling your ship with kerbals at launch, but doesn't have the other features).

For some reason, subassembly saver mod drops off things like struts and fuel connections for me when I go to "add" it to my creation....
