On February 3, 1958, the United States launched Ranger I on an Atlas-D Rocket. 13 hours later, it crashed in a controlled impact on the southeast quadrant of the Mun, providing valuable data to the composition and density of the Mun's surface, in preparation for a manned mission planned within 10 years
