Allister Technology Colonization Project

Recommended Posts

Welcome Kerbal Explorers. This is my first contribution to the craft exchange and i hope you all like it. My goal is an assortment of compatible rovers and buildings for exploration and colonization of the Kerbal Moons. This, is the beginning:

First Up, the A-Tech C1 (Allister Technology Colony 1). After much trial and error and Kerbal implosions and explosions, Allister Technology managed to piece together scraps from old wreckage and failed attempts and develop the A-Tech C1. This craft is the colonization craft, able to hold 7 Kerbs and deliver its payload directly to the Mun or Minimus with little effort. Your room for error on this < 700 part ship is huge, able to arrive, hover, and land with plenty of all 3 types of fuel left over for base operations. This is A-Tech's first step of the colonization process.

atechc1launch.png

Launch Instructions:

1. Turn off RC fuel on the station, you wont need it. At all. Thats for your colony. Set to full throttle and blast off.

2. For best efficiency, overheat your main-stage engines (mainsails) to just below exploding, then back off your throttle three ctrl clicks and let the engines stay there for the remainder

3. Side-Mounted Rockets are set to match asparagus staging inner ring of engines. Stage as each of the core pairs of engines burn out their fuel. Dont bother slowing down. The dumped engines will be pushed away from the A-Tech C1

4. Begin manual control around 8000 feet. The craft seems to like to pitch ever so slowly to 270 degrees, so little tweaks are necessary here for gravity turn prep.

5. 10-15k You should begin your gravity turn.

6. Hit your desired AP and cut engines, then burn to full at 25-30 seconds in front of your ap and circulate.

7. Pick a moon, Begin your colony!

Command Groups

2: Landing Legs

3: Com Dish, Solar Panels, Antenna

4: Flood Lights, Great for landings and ground visibility

5: Deploy Parachute, For Those of you more adventurous than I

Now, as this is our first contribution to the spacecraft industry, included is the A-Tech R1. Designed for refueling the colony with future aspirations of use for fuel transfer throughout upcoming ships and infrastructure. This rover will dock very easily with the C1, and is very steady on its wheels on flat ground. It will turn at 20 m/s, just dont expect it to be on a dime. The wedged wheel layout works very well for controlling those nasty rollovers. The R1 is not equipped with self-flippers or emergency systems, so lets not crash it.

I'll admit it, its not pretty, but it is quite a lot of fun to drive, it does the job it sets out to do, and well, its temporary. A-Tech will be upgrading this as the project expands.

atechc1r1docked.png

The A-Tech Rover will be attached to a delivery system and updated, so you may download and colonize with ease. For now, enjoy cruising it around the airstrip. ;)

Update,

The Kerbs at base 1 got sidetracked after A-Tech R1 blew up attempting to attain orbit. Multiple times. So instead, the crew at A-Tech put their little green heads together and came up with a new rover! Compatible with the A-Tech C1, the new A-Tech Powerhog comes equipped with excessive power storage, its own moon hovering system, and a full Mun / Minumus single launch delivery system. If you can land the A-Tech C1, you can land the A-Tech Powerhog. Flight instructions mirror those of the C1. The Powerhog conveniently comes strapped with 2 Mosquito's, one for each of the kerbs on board.

Caution: Minumus low gravity and the A-Tech Powerhog's high center of gravity make it somewhat tippy. Best operated on level terrain.

This staging was done during a massive asparagus inspired spin. Dont worry about counter-balancing the spin or trying to stop it. All staging releases will automatically avoid colliding with the kerb delivery system and you can fix the spin after attaining LKO.

Upon reaching Minimus orbit, the kerbs on board decided it'd be best to snap a picture, before plummeting willing to surface with a high chance of splatter

Upon arriving safely, docking to the C1 and topping up its RC fuel from the 1500 RC reserves delivered, the Powerhog deploys and sucks up the sun.

screenshot36j.png

After all the hard work, the A-Tech Test Crew based at Minimus decided they were "bored". They immediately set to drawing up plans for an extracurricular rover fun machine. The plans were sent back to A-Tech VAB where construction began. After 48 hours of knocking their little green heads together and tweaking the wheel alignments (blah!) the A-Tech XCEMV was set on the pad for launch.

For making your craft more computer friendly (a plus) and efficient (a debatable plus, I mean, it is KSP...), I'd advise to maybe use a launch vehicle similar to Temstar's NOVA SHLLV. When I launched my own single-ship colonies, I used an indigenous launch design based on Temstar's, and it worked pretty well.

Temstar's rocket family, you could choose one or just look at his designs

my own one launch colony (much larger in terms of crew, nil in terms of other resources)

All in all, its nice to see other people creating monstrous ships for one-launch, at least mostly complete colonies.

I tried your colony ship about a week ago. Had some trouble making the fuel last long enough to not bounce off the surface of my target. My LKO efficiency is... not quite up to par. Hence the copious amount of fuel on my delivery systems.

I find its often better to launch the payload and transfer stage on different rockets then dock them in orbit

or just refuel it in orbit to save on the size of the launcher

Agreed. The plan is to test all the colonisation equipment at minmus then expand its capabilities to other planet systems. We will be developing a custom tug to fit all A-Tech vehicles and stations.

It's so incredibly huge that it makes me crying even before my computer starts to cry X)

Yes yes. The C1 is the worst of them. Ill work on posting a more efficient less parts delivery system for the c1 tonight / tommorrow.

I really like your refueling rover designs. I've been playing around in the assembly buildings with refueling rovers and not really found a design that achieved the right balance of appearance and funtionality but yours seem to have managed that. I'm not going to simply use yours, since I do prefer the challenge of creating parts for myself but these will definitely be an inspiration toward my future designs.

Thanks! Feel free to use / modify them. I found the A-Tech MST is awesome for delivering monopropellant. Requires a little use while landing, but other than that delivers a huge quantity, in a very stable unit. On the minmus lake I was able to do gradual turns at 48m/s without the wheels lifting off. Took a good downhill grade to build the speed, but handled the bumps and drops wonderfully. Honestly think I spent more time airborne building speed downhill... Smooth ride, no wheels popped at the hill to lake sharp transition either. I'm very happy with the MST. Its a beast fuel truck.
