Centrifugal Stage Separation - anyone else do it?

Recommended Posts

I do this for ships already in space - generally transfer orbit injection stages and landers - and I also did it prior to sepratrons existing. I didn't realize MechJeb didn't hold roll, though - I'll have to try your method. Sepratrons are such a pain to stage.

Howdi...

Neat idea...I did it a few times but with small things like winglets.

I just cut throttle, sep out aspy stages and slowly push out; it isnt very efficient; I still have roll problems as I am still learning - ALOT !

I cant see a real need for this yet but there may be other areas - space stations which naturally spin might have something that needs seperating; but not have to force this kind of seperation.

I used rotation to turn my solar panels on quicker...!

I use the spinny separations for stack mounted stages only. I tried it with radial mount separations, and it tends to collide with the thing they're separating from. It seems more reliable to position the sepratrons in such a way as to push the spent stage away from the core they're attached to.

It's actually very useful even outside of this jankey seperation method. I.E. if you have one last asparagus stage left you can rotate the craft parallel to the ground so when they are staged, they eject sideways and not above/below you at all where they could fall back and wreck you launch.

Does that actually help? I'm pretty sure they open at the same speed no matter what you do

I mount one seraptrons facing straight up, at the bottom of the object being drop, directly opposite the radial connection point. The off balance location help rotate the top way form my craft.

I assume you mean with the nozzle pointing up? Lower in the atmosphere radial parachutes can also be used to great effect by peeling away the radial stages
