I have recently had the opportunity through my school to fly in a B-17 bomber. It was absolutely amazing.

And this is a video of the takeoff.

This really was an amazing experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity. It really helps me to begin to understand what those pilots in WW2 had to work with. I am so glad that I had the chance to fly in one of these before they are all gone.

I live right next to an airport and we get a B-17 that flies through it several times a year.

Very distinctive sound coming off of four radial engines. It really stands out.

When I was a kid back in the early 70's the forestry service was still using surplus B-17 and B-24 to dump fire retardant on brush fires.

I live right next to an open grassy area near the mountains and used to get to see them coming in at 200 feet or so to drop retardant and then zoom over the house a lot.

It's an impressive plane and I suspect in coming years it will eventually disappear from the skies.

It's great that you got a chance to fly in it before they are all gone.
