ArcAngelSlayer
Hi guysI was playing for quite a few months and have had a break. I'm considering transferring to steam but I have a few questions I can't seem to find with the search function. If I transfer to steam will I be eligible for the expansions when/if they come out?Do mods work the same on steam?Have any of you had any issues with the steam version? Thanks guys
Sir Nahme
1: Can't answer that but then no one on the forums could for sure, it should provided they are tied to key and your key is flagged2: yes3: no more than regular ksp issues and the usual round of end-user issues with all steam instals (must be an administrator ect) you can launch ksp directly without steam being onl
Ted
The latter two questions are well answered by Sir Nahme. However, the first one could be speculated upon further. I would imagine that as long as you have proof of purchase for your copy of KSP, you should be eligible for any expansions that may come out. lyndonguitar
If I transfer to steam will I be eligible for the expansions when/if they come out?If you bought the game before may 2013, yes.Do mods work the same on steam?Yes.Have any of you had any issues with the steam version?Nope, I used steam from the start and actually find it more easier, it adds to your collection, tracks playtime, and sharing screenshots is very easy. also updates tend to come alot more fasteredit: mod ninja'd
AlteranEmpire
One downside to Steam, tells me how little of a li....... er how much time I spend playing such great games. Thought I played Star Trek for like an hour, Steam "34 Hours Played".......

EndlessWaves
I would wait and see how steam handles patching, with some games it will insist you update before letting you play - which often causes havoc with things like mod compatibility (we haven't had an update since the game was made available in the steam store). TheHengeProphet
There is one issue with steam, in that you can't keep old copies of the game. That's the only one I know of.
boonstick
I hope that we do get all the future updates. I do kind of regret transferring my copy to steam..
ThePsuedoMonkey
-snip- you can launch ksp directly without steam being onlI've never been able to do that.
EndlessWaves
Problem solved Try it and see. That option determines whether the game checks for updates in the background ('automatically') or when you launch the game, not whether the game requires you to have the latest version before it'll run. Capt'n Skunky
Yes, Yes, and none that weren't solvable (usually user error). You can keep copies of older versions by just making a copy of the folder in your Steam Library. Steam will only use the copy in "Kerbal Space Program" and only update if you have it set to automatically. So if you turn off automatic updates, you can switch between versions by renaming folders.Cheers!Capt'n SkunkyKSP Community Manager
macbernick
I don't think it's possible to have multiple installations of the game with steam. That's a big issue, for me at least.
ThePsuedoMonkey
You can do it the way Capt'n mentioned. Steam will run whichever is named "Kerbal Space Program" and ignores the one with "[modcraft]" in the folder name even if I execute that one (same goes for when I rename the other "...[vanilla]"). Not exactly multiple installs, but reasonably close to it.edit: like this Edited May 12, 2013 by ThePsuedoMonkey
macbernick
Sure. But once you have disabled auto-update, accepted to have to rename folders to launch the version you want when you want it, you can begin to ask yourself if the Steam jail is really this convenient once you have disabled every conveniences it offers. I have a bunch of KSP icons in my launchbar, I update when I want, I can play on the go without Internet connection... My choice is done
ThePsuedoMonkey
I know what you mean, man... I choose to believe that one day KSP will opt out of Steam's DRM and just use it for distribution like Star Ruler does. I've no idea how likely this is, but if it happens I will also have those options as well! In the interim, KSP is worth jumping those hoops. But yeah, you've hit the nail on the head there. My choice is done one of the main reasons i don't use steam or any other alway's online drm/store system.StarcraftII being the exception but there i do follow some of the matches online and very rarely play a multiplayer match. macbernick
Yes, with or without Steam, KSP is great anyway.Edit : for the folder renaming thing, a simple sh/batch script can do it for you anyway. Edited May 12, 2013 by macbernick
AndersSchm
You can play Steam games in offline mode if you're that concerned about updates/having to be online/advertising.

Capt'n Skunky
Look, it's really simple. If you like and use Steam, get the Steam version, if you don't like Steam, get it from our store. The bottom line is complaining about it isn't going to change anything nor is it going to help the OP.You can do the same things with BOTH versions. The only difference is the Steam version requires Steam, why wouldn't it? It's the STEAM version. It's like buying a car and complaining you have to drive on these *nose in the air*... roads.I believe the OP's question has been sufficiently answered here.Cheers!Capt'n SkunkyKSP Community Manager
