Something from nothing

I sent a spaceship with a satellite to the Mun, but it never got to orbit the Mun. I ran out of power so it flung past the Mun and Minmus. And now, it's orbiting the FLIPPING SUN!!!

Something from nothing, something from nothing.

Anyone else had something much better happen from a failed mission?

My best failed mission was an attempt to get to Duna. The Mun got in the way of my Pe kicks. It also got in the way on the flip side. I ended up getting into interplanetary space for only 500ish Dv. From there I just went ahead and encountered Jool with plenty of fuel to visit its moons :P

So was going for Duna... Mun got in the way and flung me really fast... got a nice out of phase intercept with jool from it :)

That's just how things work. If you were on an escape trajectory from Kerbin (which is what I assume "flung past the Mun" means), then once you leave Kerbins sphere of influence, you'll end up orbiting the star.

Not to blow your mind or anything, but you're orbiting the Sun right now!

Well it's not like your gonna blow up or anything if you've missed the mun, orbiting the sun is one of the most common results if one should do a similar thing to what you've done.

Now what's more impressive is not landing on a sun orbiting trajectory, but actually intersecting another planet

Between Kerbin and Mun I went EVA. Not knowing how to control the EVA I ended up not being able to get back to the ship. The poor Kerbal was last seen heading out after getting a boost from Mun. I ended up deleting that save so I will never know where he would have ended up.

oh man the horror!!!, I'm glad I'm not gonna let that happen to one of my Kerbals

Continually failed at landing 3 Kerbals on the Mun, raged and throttled the engines up and pointed prograde. Escaped the Mun, escaped Kerbin, got an intercept with Jool, and landed Jeb, Bill, and Bob on Laythe.
