Real basic noobie question.

Recommended Posts

I tried using F1 to take a snapshot of a daft situation I got myself in to, but I have a weird keyboard that doesn't use standard F keys so I am not sure if it actually took a picture. Where do the pictures get saved if it was successful? Also, where do ship designs get saved, as I would like to transfer a couple of designs from my desktop to my laptop so that I don't have to build them from scratch.

Hmmm. They must be saving them somewhere else, as there isn't a Screenshot folder in my KSP folder, and the only files in the Saves folder are the scenarios and training folders. Screenshots aren't too much of a problem, as I can do that using the windows screen shot function, but not being able to find the vehicle saves folder is a bit of a bummer.

That's really weird. Are you playing the store version or the Steam version (though there really shouldn't be a difference.) The other question is, where is your KSP_Win folder located if you are playing the store version? The preferred location for a Windows machine is in something like

C:\Games\KSP_win

If you keep it on your desktop, or even in Program Files, you will have trouble with it sooner or later due to system permissions. The game should have created a saves folder the very first time you made a save though, even if you're on the demo.

If you're launching the game from a shortcut, you might try the following just to make sure that you don't have two KSP folders going:

1. Right click on the shortcut that you use to start the game (wherever that shortcut is) and choose Properties.

2. Click the button that says "Open File Location."

3. Check the path at the top of the window against where you believe your KSP folder is located. Addtionally, this should be the folder that contains the correct saves and screenshots and all the rest.

Does the game retain any information from flight to flight? That is, if you launch a vessel into orbit, or even put one on the launchpad, then hit escape and choose Space Center, can you then go to the tracking station and choose to switch to the flight you just left? If you get out of the game and come back, is the flight still there?

If you are playing the steam version you can also use F12 to take screenshots. Those are saved in some steam folder, but they are easy to access directly from the game's page in your library.

Yes. And even better: Steam uses your screenshot as a background

I like tot ake the screenshot with steam, since I can manage them better this way. And I can upload them to the cloud, so I have them available to all my PCs.

At the moment it is in C:\Program Files\Kerbal\KSP_win

Maybe I should try a fresh unzip to a cleaner directory. Oh and I'm using the store version.

ETA: Ok I've moved everything to a directory with a cleaner structure C:\Kerbal\KSP-win The Screenshots and Playername save folders are now present, though I have lost my previously saved flights. Not a big problem as I have only just started and had one ship on Mun, and two docked in orbit around Kerbal.

Remember to hit F2 before taking pictures to remove the HUD off your screen, also holding middle mouse button down while moving the mouse will move camera so you can pull off better shots. I don't think I have ever taken as many photos playing any other game, feel like the paparazzi :)

Happy papping.
