Super-Heavy VTOL Issues

Recommended Posts

Well, I am giving up on landing a VTOL perfectly... those glitchy wing effects are causing serious issues! :(

Heres the craft (final version; requires B9 Aerospace): MediaFire

If anyone can manage to land this thing from 1km up using the vertical engines only I'll give you a lifetime supply of cookies.

Edit: I might have a solution. Don't try to land from 1 km up :P

I had a thread on VTOL's recently. It got moved to mission reports. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/29750-Fun-with-VTOL-s

While the ones I was working with are easy to build, some of them had parts edited to add or remove fuel and all were based on an engine with it's isp edited well into the cheating zone. Still, they're fun and easy to fly and for Munar work or other low g enviroments standard engines would probably work well enough.

A couple of things you might want to try is to angle out your engine exaust. You lose a bit of lift but gain a lot of stability. You might also want to look into using mechjeb for hover control. With it running the throttles you're free to try and fly and trigger booster thrusters if needed. It also gives nice smooth climb and descent rates. With rockets anyways, not sure how well it can handle hovering with jets.

Anyway, check out some of the videos in the other thread. Maybe you'll find some ideas.
