What did you do in KSP1 today?

It's a great day to be alive. Beautiful sunset landing after planting some flags on Minmus. Getting geared up for the return of X-Files tonight. Mulder and Scully need to investigate the polar regions of Minmus. Somethings going on and the truth is out there. Conspiracy pic included. Jeb refused to get closer and whined all the way back to the ship - something about probing.

Because KSP.

What? I see nothing wrong with this. ;)

Worked more on RSB. The Atlas V family is getting pretty complete, with the SRBs being the newest part.

A few days ago I downloaded a Mod simulating the Orion thermonuclear pulse engine. Today I experimented with how to use it as a powerplant in a plane intended to do a polar circumnavigation of Kerbin, inspired by a story I read in a science fiction book eons ago.

I am making slow but certain progress. Getting enough wing area to hold it aloft was a challenge, as was providing adequately sturdy landing gear. This thing is a pig, and I haven't got all the bugs worked out, yet. I can get it going pretty well. Since it doesn't need intakes, I just want to get it high enough in the atmosphere that I won't incinerate myself because the air is too thin. I haven't yet worked out what altitude to fly at for minimal atmospheric heating, and since it's technically an airplane, I think leaving the atmosphere at any point would disqualify the attempt.

Some views of The Pig:

Early version with swept wings.

Best version (so far) with resized wing connectors, type B.

Just before it started to descend. I think I need more altitude, and to remember turn on the RCS. ;)

I took my spaceplane to Duna, and attempted landing. A few times.

I always loved to build SSTO planes, but I never really used one. Since I built one lately that (amongst other merits) has an ISRU and a drill, I was like 'hell, let's go anywhere'. So I decided to do a Laythe trip, refueled the plane... and set a Duna intercept 'cause I didn't have the dV for a direct transfer and was lazy to plot a slingshooty route. Thought I'll mine at Ike, but I was afraid to do an aerobraking and lacked the fuel to circularize and land. Ahh well, Duna will do too, so I went in for a landing - aerodynamic unpowered one.

I thought it can't be hard, the gravity is even lower than on Kerbin, right? Well, I must say something is seriously wrong with that planet. The ground is like a rubber trambouline and the atmosphere is ludicrous too. I'm definately sure that landing a plane is possible there - even without it being designed for that very task... but the one I brought has kinda' the worst profile for that.

I'm convinced that if I find a long enough flat surface I'll succeed... but I didn't. I won't tell how many times I tried, let's just say that GF asked if I'm watching a Michael Bay movie.

Made a Sea Search and Patrol air craft...need it because these guys are making speedy boats with left over parts....

The lower hydro foil is a Sea Tiger Vx, needs the front V foil for turning....

Just remember its not a boat if its not touching the water....flys like a boat when in the air.....fastest is 60 m/s

Today I played with flying saucers. They glide well, but you have to give them a boost when you want one to go up. Down is no problem. ;)

Also I angled north, then west, to ensure the booster didn't land on anything expensive.

screenshot681_zpsjcdruyoo.jpg

Shortly after dropping the booster.

screenshot683_zpshsbhgecf.jpg

Descent beginning, turning retrograde to arrest horizontal movement, then engaging stability mode to ensure we glide back the way we came.

screenshot682_zpsxm643wn9.jpg

Gear extended. They don't seem to have any negative effects on the glide.

screenshot684_zpsok7l3w3h.jpg

Braking (selecting retrograde) so I can land just north of the west end of the runway.

screenshot685_zpsinknyawv.jpg

I guess there isn't quite as much drag as required. Time to hit the silk.

screenshot686_zpsrp49pftb.jpg

Eight radial chutes to slow it this much.

Back on Kerra Firma.

I took a little time today to mess around with some missions I haven't done before while getting ideas for restarting (and starting over) my old mission report.  The concept last time was a kerbalized history of project Apollo and beyond.  I'm thinking this time of expanding that premise a little.

PZI6OMJ.png

No picture of my R7 yet - I'm mostly satisfied with it but I was really just testing out its ability to launch a Sputnik a Soyuz.  It seems to be both way too powerful for what it was, and not quite strong enough.  I didn't take many screenshots since I'm not running these missions "for real" right now - I'm just testing out designs but I was rather pleased with this one.  The Second stage of the R2 can be seen behind as Sputnik begins its first orbit of Kerbin.

In the new version the atmosphere of Duna at the surface is only 5% of the Kerbin...  at that pressure the wings don't work and the velocity of the plane is very high, so you need a long distance to land and to take off...

This is my only successful design for a drone plane.

tyQUJo5.png

The landing velocity is around 80m/s, and the distance to brake (only 12t) is around three hills... I am taking a lot of experience in Duna atmosphere with this plane, enough to say that I will not try to land your plane, is better to think that your plane is a rocket with that atmosphere.

I am impressed that you tried so many times.

Started having a play with Infernal Robotics, want to build a crane arm to go on the back of a rover to pick and position modules for my upcoming Mun or Minimus refuelling base.  Test rig was a Mk2 lander capsule with a 4000 capacity battery on the roof, and the arm on top of that.  Managed to generate enough torque lifting an FL-T200 at full arm extension that I snapped the battery off the pod roof :D

What mod are the legs from?  Doesn't look like IR.

And I'm yet to give it up! It was just late and KSP decided to crash on the Nth quickload. I am -sure- my plane will land. the question is how 'cheaty' the way I'll need to use. My options I can think of:

2% cheatiness: further quickload abuse. On some attempts I was -this- close.

10% cheatiness: googling a Duna map to find a relatively flat area around the equator.

24% cheatiness: bleeding my speed to under 100 m/s on below 1km elevation, turning retrograde (surprizingly easy in Duna's atmo) and slay the remaining horizontal speed with a full powered swiwel burn as soon as the gears touch the ground.

44% cheatiness: activate infinite fuel and use my upward-facing junos to push the plane to the ground when the gears touch the soil.

I'd hate to admit defeat and revert to the arrival at Duna. But since I see that the atmo is a fluffy pillow instead of a hammer, I can just aerobrake for an Ike landing.

I rate this at 0% cheatiness and 100% badS. Go for it!

Today, I sank everything into a single multi-satellite launch and refit mission, then had to save and exit. My career has been eaten by the kraken, with physics tearing the ship to bits when I reload it.

After a fuel resupply, and then another resupply to attach 12 extra radiators and some struts, my 4-Kerbal monstrosity of questionable aesthetics is on its way to Urlum... coincidentally on the 30th anniversary of Voyager 2 reaching Uranus.

x9CCFl9.png

Somehow, during all that preparation, no one noticed the complete lack of transmitters on the vessel; but the scanning probe still needs to be launched (because both the original and the backup fell off the mothership), so some extra communotrons will be attached to it for Algee the engineer to steal retrieve. Hopefully the kerbonauts weren't planning to watch Knetflix for the next 4 years...

A fevered nights activity saw the unveiling of the Kompact Refinery Automated Place holder...... No one knows if it will actually work but the design brief was merely " bang together something so people don't realise we forgot to design one at the start of the project".

screenshot218_zpsfiuxgwvz.png

Testing was confined to checking it fitted in the Deliverance system test rig,

screenshot221_zpsf7ymti5z.png

The fit was evaluated as "snug" but worth despatching as Bill could always work out any little problems, it's not like he has anything else to do at the moment.

Launch will take place as soon as the pad is cleared of some strange space debris with threatening notes attached.

Over the last few days, I have made two small aircraft, with a certain aesthetical allusion in mind.

The first ship is called the Murayr, the latter is the Droemryr (don't ask for why I gave them such unusual "medieval fantasy names"). Though I doubt they can make near-orbit, I was surprised to find that the Droemryr was still flying well 6 km above sea level. Though not visible in the pictures, the Murayr has 2 Puffs and 1 Dawn (may change), and the Droemryr has 4 Puffs and 2 Dawns (subject to change). Both ships come with a Junior and a Standard Clamp-O-Tron docking port "shielded" by an Asteroid Day dish, which makes for a very sleek "shielded" port design that fits perfectly on the sleek ships.

The Murayr was quite difficult to make flyable, due to center of mass being far back and the center of lift being too far forward, but many RCS tanks to fuel the already-present Puffs fixed the issue. The Droemryr didn't provide any difficulty in adjusting it's center of lift to make it capable of going airborne, as layering the two sets of wings to make 6 sets (not clipping 3 sets into each other twice, I used a better low-clipping solution) at the back of the tail was all that was needed.

Also, there have been rumors of advanced ship construction in the Spaceplane Hanger... It isn't very "advanced", and is no second Flagship

Spoiler

Note that this ship isn't complete and has not ever been launched. It will probably need editing once it is in a flyable state, as I intend to make it an SSTO capable of carrying the other two ships in it's cargo bay.

My first successful lithobraking :P In honor of the big snowstorm here in the States (apparently) Val was in the mood to go Mun sledding. I wish I had video, when I finally stopped panicking I was doing 56m/s about 1m from the surface, skimming and skipping along- then the big crater loomed ahead and somehow I survived going airborn into it- Val held her steady with nerves of steel. Bonus: landed  skidded to a stop in another biome :D

First of all I have to admit that even though I played KSP first time when there was only Mun and Minmus avaiable, this is my first attempt of going to Duna. Even though I only have a contract to explore Ike, I really want to go down on Duna. Because a friend of mine is making fun of me since I've never been there and in our actual carreers I'm slightly ahead of him so this turned into some kind of space race as well. Turns out I'm still facing problems..

Still don't understand how I upload an album like in the above posts - sorry!

Well maybe I should just land on Duna take a picture, send it to said friend and quickload afterwards and then try to get Ike before returning home :)
