A suggestion for the modding community- An index for up-to-date mods/packs!

Recommended Posts

It's really what it says on the tin...

I've been having a rather chaotic time rummaging through the forums and SpacePort trying to figure out which mod is already compatible with the new 0.20 version... And I was thinking... "Oh, if only there was a thread or other place I could go to and have these things all sorted out..."

So why don't we? SpacePort is useful enough, but it doesn't really have a "version" filter, which would really serve the same purpose... Only not all mods/packs are on SpacePort. Take mine for instance- the bloody thing is still cordoning me from uploading the C-Corp. Pack successfully...

So why not have some sort of indexed thread to keep it all ordered?

There can be the "Up-to-Date" section, the "Almost Up-to-Date"- for packs/mods that are a version behind; and the "Not Up-to-Date"- for those that have fallen off but are still usable.

And why stop there? There could also be sections for mods or packs that offer different things- plugin-only/utility mods, parts-only packs... The works!

So, any fine-mannered Kerbal round here wanna help me sort all these out? I am willing to put in the work, though I doubt I'd have the time to do all of it...

Why not just search for 0.20? There are just a hand full(if not less) mods that support 0.20 atm...

Searching for "0.20" gives results that include anything and everything that has "0.20" in it's title, short or long description, so it doesn't show accurate results... Plus, SpacePort is still... weird and doesn't seem to have updated some names right...

Does 0.20 support the JS Generic Mod Enabler?

everything supports JSGME. (or, more accurately, JSGME supports everything) all JSGME does is put files into places, as they exist in the folder structure.

Also, I completely and utterly support this idea. It would be WAYYYY useful. .. but, of course, only if people used it.

Another thing that would be useful is also SQUAD warning before changing the whole way to install mods and file structure BEFORE releasing an update.

They did say they were changing the loading method and file structure... I would've liked an input on how that would have changed, so modders could prepare... But hey... It's all good...

Um, they did .. they also posted in the blog and weekly update thing how to fix mods to be compatible ... perhaps it would be useful if you read the blogs and weekly updates to see what Squad has had to say.

This folder structure change will be a good thing. People shouldn't quibble about how horrible it is to have to learn where to put things, especially since it's really a very simple and straightforward change. Once mods are updated, it will be much, much easier for players to install or remove specific mods in their entirety.

In .19 you had to put in some cases three or more different folders in different places, and if you wanted to remove the mod, you'd have to know exactly which folders were added by that mod and remove them one by one, leaving other folders alone.

Now you'll be able to drop a single folder into GameData, and if you want to remove it, you just delete that one folder. No hunting around for where all the components of the mod went, because they're all bundled together in one place.

"Another thing that would be useful" is for people to stop assuming that they can just update the game and have all their mods continue to work as they did before, and complaining when instead it breaks their saves and they can't build ships properly and they've lost everything because they didn't even bother to make a backup. Show some common sense, please. Updates can break things. Make backups. Install new versions to a separate folder. If things don't work right, have patience while the mod authors update them.

How does having Sexually Transmitted Diseases change your ability to read blogs?

On another note: it is fairly simple to fix plugins that broke once you found the source. The API is generally the same, after all.

Seems that if the plugin only uses the <kerbaldirectory>/parts and <kerbaldirectory>/plugins it works, but <kerbaldirectory>/plugindata does not
