VAB Docking ports on side of ship

Hello

I am trying to attach some probes to the sides of my rocket, however when I try to do this it doesnt show the green ball on the satellites docking port that indicates that its able to connect. is there anything I am doing wrong?

From what I've seen, if you build something and then move it, it can only attach by the same part, so I'm guessing that probe was built from the bottom xenon tank up.

Eric is correct, it is best to grab the probe by the docking port, especially when using subassembly loader.
