SAS and ASAS performance

Two questions;

1st>

Is it just me or do the SAS and ASAS feel extremely weak since .20 release? Any ship I've had prior to .20 I've not had too much problem getting the ship to rotate. Now, it takes a good two minutes to haul a ship around from pro to retrograde. Right now I have MechJeb trying to get into an orbit with nothing but a probe on an orange tank, and it just cannot rotate fast enough to catch the node.

What difference, besides labeling, does the SAS and ASAS have? Do they behave differently?

Neither of those two modules help you rotate a ship

SAS dampens your rotation when it's active.

ASAS is Only a guidance computer and does not have any type if force on its own. When it's active it makes all the other parts of your ship that Can exert forces hold the ship on the same heading.

To add torque to your ship you need to add command pods or probe cores

... night and day difference, once you understand what does what.

For 0.20, I'm rebuilding my refueling station ground up. So I started reworking my lifter stage. I slapped on the Stayputnick on top of an SAS, ASAS, orange fuel tank, and the Mainsail. At launch, everything worked as I expected. Left it all up to Mechjeb to get me there to validate that the ship works. However, once it got into orbit, it was routinely missing nodes because it wasn't moving, or couldn't keep up. I thought it was electrical, so I slapped on some thermo-generators, but still ran into the same problem. Threw more SAS and ASAS at the problem and got not much more out of it, which led me here with my OP.

So I upgraded to what I thought looked bigger for a command point, and slapped 8 more on the end of my structures. Thing steers better than expected.

So it MUST have been that I've been building the right rockets with the wrong parts and just managed to get it working without realizing what each part did. ... Must have some Kerbal in me? ;)

So now I get to laugh properly when my last stage burns torwards Kerbin when it fires off its 120 mini SRBs. >:]
