Help making a good rover

Recommended Posts

So I made this pretty solid rover who could roll pretty good in Kerbin, but it turns out that in the moon the slightest movement flips it like crazy...

How do I make one that works well in low gravity environments?

Try some different wheels, the ones you're using (the new ones) are rather touchy and prone to spinning out of control. Given your design I'd try the Rovemax 1 wheels (the brown ones)

If that doesn't work, try disabling the motors on one pair of wheels and the slower speed might make it handle a bit better.

Unless it's changed, I think the rover's WSAD keys are still also doing the regular spaceship pitch/yawn/roll controls, so that might be it. Can you rebind the rover drive keys to something like the arrow keys?

Make sure you have mapped the rover control keys off from WASD as it also applies rotational torque. You could also try disabling motors and locking the steering from rear/front wheels. 4 wheels driving is a bit overkill for most places but can come handy in extreme slopes. One thing I've also done is apply some downward thrust by adding an ion engine on the roof. It really helps especially on low gravity world like Minmus and also makes high speed rides on Mun a bit more safe.

Yeah, as people have said, in normal staging mode, WASD also controls your rotational torque in addition to your wheels. Most people suggest using docking mode, which disables the torque, but I actually prefer to rebind it to IJKL, that way if I suddenly go into a big flip I can use WASD to right myself so I land correctly; as long as you land on your wheels and they don't actually fall off, you should be ok, since your Kerbal can fix them on EVA
