How to replace command module in the VAB?

Ohhh, the problem was that the replacement module spawned within the rocket's body.

Took me a while to realize the part was there, as opposed to nowhere at all, since a bit was protruding from a fuel tank.

However, I do have to say part replacement is definitely a non-evident feature. Should be clarified somewhere.
