Max Travel Rover

Recommended Posts

So my inspiration for this comes from my other hobby 4x4ing. Based on rock buggys.

So a wide stance was needed.

In the back here we see the W3 power plant in its shrouding.

screenshot8_zpsfea9e3a2.png

I put a long I beam down the middle as a "frame" and than small cubic struts at the ends for the wheels to mount to. Added bonus for this setup after a few struts its strong but seems to have give if you land to hard.

You can see the RemoteTech mod antennas make cool looking front bumper :D as well as flood and beam lights for those high speed runs.

On top is a small solar panel setup just in cause something happens to the power plant and some rear facing lights for tire repair or not backing up over flags :P. Also is a 50Mm folding commdish for those times you need to stay in contact with the base.

Time for testing!! Jeb your up!!

screenshot44_zps2d20fe8d.png

Seems to handle jumps well, no spinning forward just launches nice and even and land true. Also handles bad launches with landing on 1 tire.

Stat found in testing: A level jump max speed 22 m/s, uneven jump 15m/s, anything more seems to pop a tire.

Now for some long distance testing!!!

Jeb and Bill said this testing should be done by remote control cause "just driving is boring".

Off to the mountains we go. Seen here is max speed with max warp and no problems.

Starting the climb into the mountains.

screenshot1-2_zpsf8f5ca5b.png

screenshot2-2_zpse904ab15.png

Starts to be some slow going from here.

screenshot3-1_zps703650eb.png

.... really slow ....

screenshot5-2_zpsb6336655.png

Turn the 4 wheel steer back on and start angling back and forth.

screenshot4-1_zpsf930cffc.png

OOPS little to shape :P good test run.screenshot6-1_zps48a2f68f.png

Now to setup a system that works with atmo and non atmo landings. Here is a basic setup for use on the mun or other moons and the parachutes keeps the front alittle higher than the rear on decent so it can touch down on the landing legs.

screenshot13_zpsa51ecfc3.png

I slapped it on top of a mun base lander I had made did some testing in Kerbin.

Time to go to the MUN!!!

Pusher/pull tug "Old Pete" launched

screenshot16_zps98d0bbf1.png

screenshot17_zps0c90db12.png

Angled the engines outwards to not roast what ever I may end up moving around.

screenshot19_zpsfc237227.png

To the Mun!!

screenshot20_zpsb715d0cb.png

screenshot21_zps96bf82c4.png

Ok small problem I forgot the fuel lines from the main tank to the engine tanks. Fixed it by using only 2 engines while the other 2 refill so I dont have as much down time on long burns.

Uneventful deorbit and landing on the dark side of the Mun! (plays Pink Floyd)

screenshot23_zpsf7fdf3b8.png

removing the rover.

screenshot24_zpseee3dd6d.png

Landing: Suckess!

screenshot25_zpse4c5d86d.png

After some awds spamming it got righted. The nice thing about this rover is the remote control, it was distance away after it got righted but than Jeb drives it right over next to the lander.

screenshot26_zpsc2ec73da.png

Jeb can't wait to try it out!

screenshot27_zps071e7d4c.png

screenshot28_zps93eecfd9.png

Bill joins him for the ride.

screenshot30_zps09b1b4a7.png

screenshot31_zpsd86efab0.png

Bob comes out to see them off.

screenshot32_zps6a6a0960.png

And also plants a flag for this great first landing on the Mun! (in 0.20)

screenshot37_zpsc29d3af7.png

Than Bobs off for a nap.

screenshot38_zpscd30245a.png

We're off!

screenshot34_zpsaea69281.png

Jeb pushing the limits as always.

screenshot45_zps658638d4.png

Got a strange bonce out of no where and over they go! long walk back...

screenshot46_zps88f64825.png

Time for a Duna mission! Got the new lander/rover up into orbit and a new tug docked when this happened.

screenshot47_zps092182e6.png

Damn kraken! Crushed and Ripped it right off the top of my ship in the blink of an eye.

More to come :D

Thanks for reading.

Looks good man!

I bet this rover would hold up to my roving style (ie, driving WAY to fast) better then any I've designed thus far.

Although, I am surprised Jeb didn't strap any SRBs on that while you weren't looking.
