Attention Space Pilots! Here is your chance to win fame and glory:

Orbital Ring-Racing Challenge (ORRC)

With generous grants from KSC Mission Command, we from Jodelstein Spacestuff Inc. have installed a zero-G training facility in LKO to enhance the maneuvering and orientation skills of future small-craft pilots. To celebrate the opening of this wonderful orbital station, we are holding a racing competition, calling all pilots and engineering teams from everywhere.

The Challenge

Time starts as soon as you trigger the ring-ejection mechanism of the station (Action group 1), which also undocks any spacecraft docked at the bottom of the station. Race through each of the escaping rings in any order. Then, head back to the station and exit your craft. Time stops as soon as you sit on one of the 3 extenal command seats near the spherical probe heads. Fastest time wins. 20 seconds bonus per ring cleared without destruction of a solar panel.

Categories

- Standardized Racer: Use the small rocket that is already docked to the station

- Customized Racer (Stock/Mod): Build your own craft, dock it to the station and fly with that. The station has 3 docking ports at the bottom, one of each size (Jr, Sr, normal), and you must dock there before starting the race. For the mod category, any parts and mods are permitted, with the exception of tools that automatically orient the craft (like Smart A.S.S.) or perform (semi-)automatted flight maneuvers (MechJeb and company).

- Jetpack Racer: EVA only, starting at one of the three external command seats

- Contraption Builder: if you build a vehicle that hinders or prevents the escaping of the rings, your vessel will be entered in this category

What program do you use to record video?

Microsoft Expression (Screen Capture+Encoder). Still need to figure out how to run KSP in a frameless window. I have a higher-quality version of the video, but that has about 200MB.

Add -popupwindow to the shortcut arguments.

Here is my Jetpack-Run: 5m:29s - 3*20s clearance bonus = 4:29, and still a lot of room for improvement. Actually i found this to be way easier than flying the rocket

@Jasonbail: wow, that sounds like an exceptionally fast round trip. Did you maybe forget to trigger the ring-release mechanism (Action group 1) and just flew through the rings while they were still attached to the station? 1:28 to three different targets and back to the station leaves you about 30 seconds per target and you still need to get back to the station, EVA the pilot and reach one of the seats. I have seen your excellent flights the other challenges, but that seems a bit too fast to believe without video.
