Best way to encounter Gilly from here?

Recommended Posts

I've managed to get my craft to Eve with what I think is plenty of fuel left, but now I need to change my inclination. Problem is, it's a HUGE difference. What's the most fuel efficient way to get that number down to 0.0 and still have enough to return to Kerbin? Whenever I try to change it, that number goes down at a snail's pace.

Wow... I actually hadn't thought of that, I thought you had to get it down to 0.0. That will make it MUCH easier, thanks!

One more thing: Will the altitude of the orbit around Eve affect efficiency?

Erm, if your aim is to crash into Gilly at twice its orbital speed (or fly by at that relative speed), what Nimelrian says will work. If you want to land, you will have to cancel out about that much speed, there's no way around this, I think.

I have not tried it, but if you have the delta-v, I would try to raise your AP to Gilly's orbit, with the ascending/descending node at the apoapsis. There, your horizontal velocity will be small and you will pretty much only have to add Gilly's orbital speed by burning retrograde. (And cancel out the normal/antinormal speed component for the 9,5° tilt.) I hope I got that right, it's late here.

i notice landing gear on your craft, if you do plan on landing on gilly, i suggest you be very careful, its gravity is so low that if you land even with a few meters per second too much speed, you will end up quite literally bouncing off its surface. i know on my first manual landing there i bounced 3-4 times before finally coming to a stop. remember the quicksave

Thanks a ton guys. Landed, planted flag, and made it back into Eve orbit to await a chance to return to Kerbin. Still have more than half of my fuel for the entire trip left. Man, I knew the gravity on Gilly would be low, but WOW. I landed on a slight incline, and I swear the thing was held up by ASAS alone.
