[AAR] Mission to Dres- Part 3 Added

Mission to Dres

Prologue:

KSC: “Jeb and Kirgan please report to the Debriefing Room immediately.â€Â

Kirgan: “Oh come on! We only got back from the Jool Tour four days ago!â€Â

Jeb: “Don’t worry; I’m sure this mission will be worth it, it always has.â€Â

Kurt (Flight Director): “Alright boys, you’re going to Dres!â€Â

Kirgan: “What?â€Â

Jeb: “But sir! The last mission to that planet ended in a catastrophic failure!â€Â

Kurt: “I assure you, this time you will be much more prepared. After all, your ship will be the Odyssey.â€Â

Kirgan: “The Odyssey, but I was told that it was taken apart for scrap metal?â€Â

Kurt: “Take apart the ship that visited all five of Jool’s moons, of course not! Your ride will be here shortly.â€Â

The engineers then proceeded to hastily roll out a standard Centauri V Reusable Rocket to the Launch Complex, its payload is a simple crew transport vehicle, with a Rover & Skycrane designed for Dres strapped on top.

Kirgan: “Really, this thing again? Can’t you guys get a real Bus?â€Â

Jeb: “And what kind of Bus needs a nav ball and an altimeter?â€Â

“Bus†Driver: “Umm, well maybe I’ll tell you on the way to the Launch Pad, okay?â€Â

Rather uneventfully, the two Kerbals climbed up the cheaply built Mobile Launch Tower and boarded the rocket that will take them to the Odyssey.

KSC: “Alright everyone, clear the Launch Complex! Launching in T-30…â€Â

Bob: “All systems are a go…â€Â

Jeb: “Well, I guess we're off.â€Â

Bill: “Good luck guys!â€Â

Once rendezvoused, Jeb immediately went straight for the first Clamp-o-tron Jr. he could find and forcibly slammed the Dres rover into it. The truss connecting the Skycrane to the rover bent slightly, but other than that it was not damaged.

Kirgan: “Jeb! That’s my rover, not yours remember.â€Â

Jeb: “Sorry, anyways lets go out and board the Odyssey.â€Â

Kirgan: “Holy Kraken, I swear it wasn’t all duct taped up like that when we last left it.â€Â

Bill: “Well, what did you expect? It had to be repaired after that 6000 m/s aerobrake.â€Â

Kirgan: “Oh Kerbal, looks like we forget to bring a replacement Mechjeb, no thanks to you Jeb.â€Â

Jeb: “Hey! What did I do?â€Â

2 years previously – during the Jool mission

Bill: “Okay Mechjeb, I need you to pilot the ship to Tylo.â€Â

Mechjeb: “I'm sorry, Bill. I'm afraid I can't do that.â€Â

Bill: “Excuse me?â€Â

Jeb: “Alright, that’s IT!â€Â

*Jeb angrily goes on EVA, gets a crowbar from a tool box, and pries off all of Mechjebs autopilot components.*

Jeb: “Okay activating engines in 3… 2… 1…â€Â

Jeb throws the thrust lever to 100%, and all 10 NERVAs roar to life, after the burn they immediately get an encounter with Minmus. The plan is to find a decent Kethane deposit and refuel the Odyssey so that they can reach Dres.

KSC: “Alright, stable orbit around Minmus confirmedâ€Â

Kirgan: “Hmm, we only seem to have 700 m/s of Delta V left. Can we land?â€Â

KSC: “We have already begun running simulations to find that out Kirgan, in the meantime you guys can find a decent place to mine.

There'll be more dV left for landing if you leave modules in orbit to pick them up again later, and without having to lift those same modules again you should end up with more fuel left over for the trip. That looks like a tall, wiggly, and most importantly tall thing to land on an uneven surface, I hope you find a deposit on one of the seas!

Amazing ship and great pictures. But I do not think He will land whole ship in search for Kethanium. I think under nuclear engines yiu can see lander, with the mining unit. (lander would be strongly irradiated, not that this effect works in the game right now) But maybe I'm wrong.

Those side tanks, You dock them in orbit? if so, how have You kept symmetry between the two?

Odyssey looks amazing, im gonna look for previous and future mission reports.

Yep, the ship itself is 4 parts all docked together in orbit. Making them symmetrical just takes a lot of patience. And by the way, the next chapter should be up soon.

Part 1: Kethane on Minmus

KSC: “Come in Odyssey, do you read us?â€Â

Jeb: “Yep, we read you, any news?â€Â

Bill: “Indeed, we ran some simulations and it looks like you are a go for landing. And Kirgan, you’ll have to take the lander and park it in orbit so the Miners’ drills can reach the ground.â€Â

Kirgan: “Fine, but you owe me, I haven’t been to Minmus before, remember?â€Â

Bill: “Sorry, but Jeb is the Odysseys pilot, and the lander cannot be controlled remotely.â€Â

Jeb: “Okay, enough you two, and I’m pleased to report that our sensors have detected a huge Kethane deposit down on the surface.â€Â

KSC: “Alright, now get going!â€Â

Jeb: “Okay, I’m in position and the guidance system in on.â€Â

KSC: “Remember to use Mechjeb, you can’t turn the Odyssey on your own.â€Â

Jeb: “Deorbit burn in 3… 2… 1…

Jeb: “Landing legs deployedâ€Â

Kirgan: “Careful! Even the slightest mistake can destroy the entire ship!â€Â

Jeb: “Annnd, ground contact, activating RCS to stabilize!â€Â

Bob: “That looked like a close one Jeb, and you’re clear to start mining.â€Â

Jeb: “Hmm, has anyone ever wondered why all these boulders are completely different than the rest of the surface?â€Â

Kirgan: “It was like that on Vall too, weird…â€Â

Kirgan: “Jeb, come in Jeb! It looks like the Sun is setting at your location, its time to shut down the Miner for the night... Jeb?â€Â

Jeb: “Ahh, such a pretty rock…â€Â

Kirgan: “Jeb… Have you been staring at the same rock all this time?!â€Â

Jeb: “Ummm, no… Anyways, I’ll go back in and take a- WHAT THE!â€Â

Kurt: “Jeb, what is it!â€Â

Jeb: “Uploading pic now, you guys have got to see this sunset.â€Â

Kirgan: “How? What… What is THAT!â€Â

Jeb: “Well, I guess that’s what a sunset on Minmus looks like…â€Â

Jeb: “Affirmative! Whoa! I wasn’t expecting that much TWR!â€Â

Bob: “Slow down, that’s 600 thrust coming out of those engines!â€Â

Kurt: “Stable orbit confirmed!â€Â

Kirgan: “And I’m on my way to you now.â€Â

Kirgan: “Well, I guess that was good practice for the mission. I’m coming back to the cockpit now.â€Â

Jeb: “Welcome back!â€Â

Kurt: “Alright, the Dres window should arrive in a few days.â€Â

Meanwhile at KSC…

“Bus†Driver: “Can I go home now?â€Â

Man, that's some landing! ...wait, is that a tie-down line to keep it stable? A KAS anchor? Not bad, wish I'd thought of it.

The winch didn't actually do anything, it was extended just so that Jeb could get back up if he ran out of jet-pack fuel. Though, the ship did need Mechjeb to keep it in an upright position. As for the TWR, I think it was like 15 or something.

Oh wow, He landed a whole ship, and the lander stays on orbit, hahaha, i did not seen this one coming.

I thought that lander has minig module, not oposite. I totally misunderstands yours blueprints I guess its a good way to make sure your tanks are full in one trip.

Part 2: Journey to Dres

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Kirgan: “Looks like the Dres window has just opened and our burn is in a few minutes.â€Â

Jeb: “Okay, I’ll go outside and check the hull.â€Â

Bill: “Burn in 3… 2… Now!â€Â

Bob: “Sensors read that all ten engines are performing normally.â€Â

Kirgan: “Well that’s good news… We don’t want a radiation leak.â€Â

Jeb: “Wow, I can practically see Minmus getting farther and farther away.â€Â

Kirgan: “We are going at like ten times its escape velocity.â€Â

Kurt: “Everything looks good guys. Mid-course correction will be in a few days.â€Â

Bob: “Dres encounter confirmed…â€Â

*Cheering in the control room*

Kirgan: “Hold on… our fuel levels aren’t looking so good.â€Â

Jeb: “Don’t worry dude, we’re already on our way.â€Â

Mechjeb: “SOI CHANGE DETECTEDâ€Â

Jeb: “Finally! KSC, we have reached Dres.â€Â

Kirgan: “Prepare for retro burn!â€Â

It was at this point that the two brave Kerbals began to realize their fuel situation. However, they continued with the burn as if nothing was wrong. Until of course, things went very, very wrong.

Jeb: “WHOA!!!â€Â

*Various alarms suddenly activate*

Mechjeb: “WARNING, FUEL LEVEL CRITICAL!!!!!â€Â

Kirgan: “AHH! I told you this would happen!â€Â

Jeb: “Quickly! Transfer all fuel to the main engines. Full RCS, and activate the Kethane converters!!!!â€Â

*Kirgan frantically flips dozens of switches*

Bill: “Guys? Guys! What’s wrong?!â€Â

Kurt: “Oh no…â€Â

Mechjeb: “FUEL DEPLETED!!!!â€Â

Jeb: “Um, we did make orbit right?â€Â

Bob: “Hmm let me see. Yep, you’re in orbit, why ask?â€Â

Kirgan: “Well, you might want to see this…â€Â

[The Error]

Holy crap, son. You used 10k+ LF and 12k+ Ox to get there?

Was someone other than Jeb driving, or did KSC forget to do the mission simulations again?

Part 3: The Rescue Plan

Kurt: “Umm… Well… You guys can just sit tight for a while, control out.â€Â

Kirgan: “But-“

*Bill shuts off comms*

Bob: “WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!â€Â

Bill: “Whoa, stop screaming!â€Â

Kurt: “I have a plan.â€Â

*Kurt steps in front of a crowd that has gathered around KSC*

“We heard that the mission to Dres has failed!â€Â

“What are you going to do?â€Â

Kurt: “Hey, I never said that anything has failed!â€Â

“But they’re still stranded!â€Â

“I bet they didn’t even run any simulations!â€Â

“Simulations? They probably didn’t even do calculations.â€Â

Kurt: “Ladies and Gentlemen, we come up with a plan to refuel the Odyssey.â€Â

“Hey, that thing wasn’t there a second ago!â€Â

“It’s like it just, appeared.â€Â

“So the rumors about a VAB to Launchpad teleporter are true!â€Â

Kurt: “Yep and I gave them permission to launch the rocket, RIGHT NOW.â€Â

“WHAT?â€Â

KSC: “T minus 10… 9… 87654321 GO!

ROARRRRRRRRR

“MY HEARS!â€Â

“The ground is shaking!â€Â

*Most of the Kerbals are blown off their feet*

“KERBINQUAKE!!!â€Â

“WE’RE GONNA DIE!â€Â

Bob: “Bill, the booster for the refueling tanker appears to be out of fuel.â€Â

Bill: “I was worried that was going to happen. Bartbro, Heremy, Geofnie report to the VAB ASAP.â€Â
