GPU problems!!!

hey guys, i just inserted my new graphics card (gtx 460) and that was easy enough but im not entirely sure what to plug into what. Heres a photo with annotations for the plugs and the white lines show where the plugs go. It would be great if someone could show me how to plug this thing together. Thanks!

I put the annotations so people can just go A - C for example.

It looks like C&D should be connected to A&B. But if you are not sure maybe you should just ask a friend who knows more about hardware?

Additionally, I would make sure the cables are not in the way and bundled nicely before you close it up again.

Oh ok. i wasnt too sure if i should connect C to anything because it goes straight to the hard drive. However i know nothing about this kind of thing, and yeah i will make sure all cables are clear of fans etc

wait I don't get it. Is C coming from your power supply or not?

It's hard to see what is what on the picture, but schematically it should be like this:

[powersupply unit]

|---x-Motherboard

|---X-Motherboard

|

|---[]-Harddrive

|---[]-GPU

|---[]-GPU*

* it seems your GPU needs two 12v plugs, right?

Where [] is a 12v, 4 pin coming from your PSU, x is a 12v 4 pin for your motherboard and X is a 20 pin connector for your motherboard.

Firstly, C isnt coming from the power supply no. In fact none of the plugs are coming straight from the power supply which confuses me. If its any help:

A and B come from the GPU

C comes from the hard drive

and D and E (shown below) are connected to each other and run to the optical drive

Your PSU doesnt have enough Molex Strings to feed that card. Another thing you shouldnt run a graphics card on molex plugs, 1 adapter may be okay, but 2 molex to 6 pin is asking for trouble.

You will need to upgrade the PSU. If you need some help picking one out come over to the computer building megathread, we can help you. Link Provided Here

ah, well i ended up plugging A and B to D and E. I turned it on and its seems to work. Downloading the drivers now.

Whats going on now?, Did the system power down when trying to play a game?, Card not powering on? Fried the card?

You probably need to get a new/better PSU, pre-built computers dont necessarily come with a strong enough PSU to power one more than is already pre-packaged in the case.

well i think the PSU has enough power. It said it has a 550W PSU and i dont think a GTX 460 takes that much does it? i think the problem is how ive plugged it in.

If that is true than there is plenty of power comming out of the PSU.

Molex connectors are not made to do what you are doing with them.

They were made to power optical drives and older hard drives, not a high performance GPU.

but i thought they make them for use with GPUs like the six pin connector

Your supposed to use a 6 pin form your PSU to power it, Molex is the optional way to power it that seems to be hit or miss when it comes to working.

ah, see my PSU doesnt have any six pin connectors coming from it, only 3 molex plugs. I might leave a diagram on your computer building mega thread about how im thinking of plugging it all together.
