The Delivery: A short Journey to Eve

If Jeb did cause that breach, then mission control is so going to facepalm as they realise they already sent him on the way to Jool aboard Odysseus. They could limit his snack rations, but it's against the law to prevent a Kerbal from snacking, unfortunately.

I wonder who made that law. *cough* jebediah *cough*

Jeb's a pro - he wouldn't sabotage a mission or craft with fellow kerbonauts  Personally i think it was stealthy attack of the Krakens. Sunbeam from somewhere close? Hmmm...Anyway, i hope guys got enough anti-rads onboard for everyone.

And more importantly, Snacks

CHAPTER 4: GILLY

P6kaSqll.png

zOhcaoSl.png

Shepdon: “Now, we only have a few minutes before we leave the SOI again, so I recommend we slow the entire ship down to a speed that allows the probe to enter orbit.â€Â

Lemburry: “Good idea. Halemone, how's engine 3?â€Â

Halemone: “All things considered, it's actually doing very well! When we get back to Kerbin though, I want all 4 engines replaced as well as every bit of obnoxious circuitry in this ship.â€Â

Lemburry: “Alright. Any further on figuring out what actually caused our little reactor breach?â€Â

Halemone: “Not yet. I'm still looking at the telemetry. Anyway, you slow the ship down, don't let me stop you.â€Â

Lemburry: “Ok, here we go.â€Â

2 minutes later...

Lemburry: “Engine stop at 250m/s. The probe can manage that. Shepdon, if you would...â€Â

Shepdon: “Undocking the probe now.â€Â

o9FGVFWl.png

Shepdon: “Ok, the probe's free. Now to wait until the deceleration point. This will take most of the fuel the probe has...â€Â

yqeq1LOl.png

Shepdon: “Done, the probe's in orbit.â€Â

Lemburry: “Excellent. Now, pick a good landing site for it.â€Â

Shepdon: “I guess I'll look around for a few orbits. We'll still be in control range even if we leave the SOI.â€Â

Lemburry: “Take your time. This probe cost a few hundred thousand to build and send up here.â€Â

Shepdon: “As if I don't know that already, although admittedly I have broken far more valuable equipment before now...â€Â

Halemone: “Such as?â€Â

Shepdon: “You remember that UAV we sent over to check the KSC 2? Remember how it crashed into their tracking station of theirs? 2 pieces of expensive equipment destroyed at once. Thankfully, they thought it was Bob instead of me.â€Â

KSC: “You know we can still hear you, Shepdon.â€Â

Shepdon: “Oh...â€Â

Lemburry: “HA, caught red handed!â€Â

Shepdon: “I suppose I'll need to buy Bob a drink after this.â€Â

KSC: “As well as a new UAV.â€Â

Shepdon: “To be fair, KSC 2 activated a jamming signal thinking it was the Kerssian Union attacking them. Hardly my fault it interrupted the controls...â€Â

Halemone: “Yeah, sure...â€Â

KKPqES7l.png

bcZzMMVl.png

Shepdon: “We've left Gilly's SOI, Lemburry.â€Â

Lemburry: “Ok. You picked a landing site yet?â€Â

Shepdon: “I have indeed. I'm taking the probe down now.â€Â

Shepdon: “Control, the probe has touched down on Gilly.â€Â

KSC: “We copy it's down, Libra. Well done, good piloting, unlike that UAV...â€Â

Shepdon: “What was that control?â€Â

KSC: “Nothing, just spilled crumbs all over the place.â€Â

Shepdon: “Yeah, sure...â€Â

That UAV cost...

Well, I shouldn't really say dollars, because:

1. I'm British and should say pounds.

2. These are Kerbals, not humans, and so I don't know what their currency is. Credits?

Firstly what a funny movie. (Haven't seen it in a while, but remember that scene.) secondly I think it's maybe kerbal dollars or it could be kerbal (insert name for the currency they use in Mexico) since this game was created by a Mexican company.

CHAPTER 5: THE TRANSFER HOME

RlWJTWKl.png

Shepdon: “Course plotted, Lemburry.â€Â

Lemburry: “Halemone, how are we for fuel.â€Â

Halemone: “The transfer is A-Ok, but after that, our fuel will be limited to whatever we have in the nacelle tanks.â€Â

Lemburry: “That's all? We're cutting it fine.â€Â

Halemone: “I could always call for a fuel tanker...â€Â

Lemburry: “No need, we can make it home on what we have right now. Besides, waiting for more fuel will require us to wait until the home transfer after the next.â€Â

Halemone: “If you say so. Also, I figured out what caused our engine breach.â€Â

Lemburry: “Oh?â€Â

Halemone: “It was the atmosphere of Eve. The aerobraking weakened the hull a bit as we know, but it affected the casing of engine 3 considerably, creating a joint weakness. Then the pressure got a little too high in the engine, for unknown reasons, and blasted the casing open.â€Â

Lemburry: “Wow, everything went perfectly wrong then...â€Â

Halemone: “I know, right?â€Â

Lemburry: “Not to worry, we survived with all four engines operational. Now, let's go home, shall we?â€Â

Y9dVYIGl.png

kjLjG46l.png

mxL8ih1l.png

Shepdon: “Transfer complete, we're heading home.â€Â

Lemburry: “And from Eve too; that's never been done before.â€Â

Halemone: “Just you wait until they build an Eve-capable return lander. That will dwarf our acheivement.â€Â

Lemburry: “Buzzkill.â€Â

Halemone: “Sorry.â€Â

jt74olzl.png

JpToZdil.png

Several weeks later...

Shepdon: “Mother of Kerbin, look at our inclination!â€Â

Lemburry: “We can make orbit, but we'll never change that angle with the fuel we have!â€Â

Halemone: “Control, get a fuel tanker ready for rendezvous with us in a polar orbit.â€Â

KSC: “Sorry, did you say 'rendezvous in a polar orbit?â€Â

Lemburry: “You heard him. Get to it please, we'll need the fuel to get equatorial again.â€Â

KSC: “Well, this will be tough...â€Â

CHAPTER 6: THE FINAL STRETCH

m4qWPxIl.png

Shepdon: “We are on an aerobraking trajectory, fortunately.â€Â

Lemburry: “Well, at least something is going right. Halemone, how's the hull?â€Â

Halemone: “Not bad all things considered. I've reinforced it just to be safe, but this aerobrake won't be as vicious as the one around Eve.â€Â

Lemburry: “That I know, but good thinking with the hull. Man, we probably use more plating to reinforce our hull than any other ship in service.â€Â

Shepdon: “That's only because we've been doing a lot more than most other ships.â€Â

Lemburry: “True enough...â€Â

A few hours later...

9cmV8Czl.jpg

9eGC0bGl.jpg

9MDyCadl.png

Lemburry: “Well, here goes nothing...â€Â

Shepdon: “We'll be fine. We'll pull a few G's no doubt, but nothing like Eve. That was... painful, to say the least.â€Â

7ImfI9Ol.jpg

Shepdon: “Temperatures are in acceptable range. Amazingly, the circuitry isn't frying yet!â€Â

Lemburry: “Nice to know. How's hull integrity?â€Â

Halemone: “Holding for the moment.â€Â

A few minutes later...

xVNEFTJl.jpg

Shepdon: “We're coming out of the aerobrake now.â€Â

Lemburry: “Great. Now, we need to circularise in this nasty orbit. Control, could you send the fuelling vessel up now?â€Â

KSC: “We're getting it prepped for launch. Estimated time to launch is 3 hours.â€Â

Lemburry: “Copy that.â€Â

½ hour later...

abQzRJPl.png

kM8FyTSl.png

lRmgOk3l.jpg

Lemburry: “We're in a circular orbit now. Polar, but circular.â€Â

KSC: “Copy Libra.â€Â

A few hours later...

hwKHjeEl.png

mMOwChDl.png

Shepdon: “There, the fuelling ship will rendezvous with us on the next orbit.â€Â

Lemburry: “Good, good. Must have been a bit taxing to get into this orbit.â€Â

A few hours later...

Halemone: “Ok, fuel reserves are at about half. We can get into an equatorial orbit now.â€Â

Lemburry: “Brilliant.â€Â

SxqaBgul.png

Gh6p3KJl.png

Lemburry: “Engine cut-off. Shepdon, how are we looking?â€Â

Shepdon: “Perfectly equatorial, we made it. We've become eccentric in doing so, but we can fix that.â€Â

Lemburry: “Oh absolutely, and once we get to the drydock, I'll call up a shuttle to take us down to the surface for a few weeks.â€Â

Halemone: “A nice relaxing break?â€Â

Lemburry: “Exactly. We deserve it after all we've been through.â€Â

The Libra is in the region of 12 years old, and has had the same crew throughout its operational life (WITH breaks of course, I'm not that harsh:)). It has been to Duna about 5 times, Minmus once, and, made obvious by this story, Eve once. It was commissioned long before Outreach was developed, delivering scientific probes and equipment to both Duna and Ike, and hopefully will continue to see many more years of service.

12 YEARS!!!!! The longest space faring craft was one that I sent to Duna then I had to use it to rescue the lander by getting another lander. It had a 2-3 year service before going back to the KSC for scrap

EPILOGUE

A few weeks later, at KSC...

Flight Analyst: *Rushing* “Director? Director Gene! I need to – excuse me, good sir – Director!â€Â

Flight Director Gene: “Yes Bobsey, what is it?â€Â

Bobsey: “I've been looking over the telemetry the Libra recorded while it was out around Eve, and I think I've found something... unsettling.â€Â

Gene: “Well, what is it?â€Â

Bobsey: “Well, it might be best if you look over it yourself. There are some, err, pictures...â€Â

Gene: *Takes folder* “Let's see here...â€Â

Lemburry: “I heard Libra mentioned, what's happening?â€Â

Bobsey: “Ah, err, Lemburry! You'll probably, err, not want to read this...â€Â

Lemburry: “Gene?â€Â

Gene: “Yeah, sure, take a look.â€Â

Bobsey: “Not my fault if you freeze in terror...â€Â

Lemburry: “Why would I *looks at picture* freeze in... terror...?â€Â

Bobsey: “Like I said...â€Â

Lemburry: “Holy crap...â€Â

Gene: “And you said you didn't want weapons.â€Â

Lemburry: “But, we determined what went wrong with the engine! How could--â€Â

Bobsey: “The Libra also received low-level background transmissions, insignificant to the computer, but more than enough to give a false but convincing reason for the breach, and only after the engine blew out and the ship wasn't destroyed.â€Â

Lemburry: “This is just... This is a joke, isn't it?â€Â

Bobsey: "I wouldn't joke about something so serious. I am a former kerbonaut, you know."

Lemburry: "Then in that case, I can't believe my crew and I are alive..."

ydXpgD8l.jpg

Gene: "And neither can we."
