Kerbol Project: A Project of Exploration and Discovery

Recommended Posts

So I got inspired by Scott Manley's KSP Sentinel Project, a project that enforces planetary safety from asteroids. So I think I could make a story challenge. :D

This is a project to explore the Kerbol System. Visiting the planets sound easy, but not when you have Part Gravity on.

You must have the following mods:

KGas Industries Asteroids (Without it the asteroids don't exist. Must need.)

Part Gravity (Included with the KGas Mod. Optional if you don't like gravity.)

The following mods are recommended (but not demanded):

Kerbal Crew Manifest

Romfarer Lazor

MechJeb 2 (1.9.8 is a bit outdated)

Unless you want to suffocate the Kerbals, don't try the life support mods. :D

The followiing mods are not allowed:

HyperEdit (You can of course use it in any other scenario and saves, just not this project's.)

Unlimited Fuel (I suggest don't use it, it's cheating and humiliating.)

This challenge has finished rewriting, but I still think it is mission something. Suggestions are OK.

Rules:

1. You must have the mods above (mods recommended and not mentioned are optional) and not have the mods in the "Mods not allowed" list, or you might not see any asteroids, or you are disqualified for cheating.

2. No debugging. That is also cheating.

3. All missions are repeatable.

4. To prevent any unfairness, your score will be saved until the end of the round, when the tally begins. The person with the highest grade wins that round, and all score and storyboard resets, just to make it fair. You are however free to continue after the round, just don't demand the score from the previous played round.

5. Reattempting is allowed. If you fail, you will receive points for trying (30 base points plus penalty, plus points that would run into the minimum of 10 points of reward).

6. Killing Kerbals means 10 points penalty times the number of Kerbals killed.

7. A round involves 10 events.

8. ? (You may suggest for any rules to be applied to the project.)

Achievements:

First Dawn Spacecraft --- Rendezvous with a Space Object (20 points)

Testing --- Landing on a Space Object (25 points)

Sample Experiment --- Land and return to and from a Space Object and safely deliver the sample back to Kerbin. (50 points)

Hard Hit --- Crash on an Object (10 points, plus penalty, you murderer)

Fatalities --- Have your first fatality(ies) of the challenge (30 points plus penalty, you mruderer)

Elimination --- Crash (and eliminate) an Object (40 points plus penalty)

Nice Try --- Failed on a mission (30 points plus penalty)

? --- ? (Suggestions?)

Round 1

Now that we have begun our space exploration and discovery, we shall explore further, to go boldly where no Kerbal have gone before!

1. Explore Kerpex
The asteroid Kerpex is newly discovered, and because of that its intention is not clear. We need further exploration and observations to the asteroid.

Mission Objective: Explroe Kerpex.

Scenarios: Kerpex Exploration

Reward: 200 points

Bonus:

1. If landed on the asteroid, 40 points.

2. If returned sample, 40 poiints.

3. If crashed on Kerpex, 20 points.

Leaderboard of M1: (Name | Points | MET | Grade)

1. soranno | 40 | INCOMPLETE | N/A

2. Kerbin's New Moon
"Why do we have 2 Muns?" asked Bob. "We don't have 2 Muns!" countered Jeb, "we do, however, have 2 moons. This must be a new discovery. How exactly did it get captured is a mystery."

Mission Objective: Explore the new moon. You will find its name on this thread and when you play KSP.

Scenario: Kerbin's New Moon

Reward: 250 points

Bonus:

1. If landed on the asteroid, 50 points.

2. If returned sample, 50 points.

3. If crashed on KA-29 (Whoops, pretend you didn't hear that.), 20 points.

4. If manned, 75 points.

By the way, it is easier to go to the Mun and/or Minmus than going to the asteroid... :sticktongue: So I suggest doing a Mun or Minmus landing first. :)

Leaderboard of M2: (Name | Points | MET | Grade)

1. None yet.

Scenario Pack: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4tG_PxGhuGIaFhUU2FlUl85eGc/edit?usp=sharing (SpacePort is acting up sometimes)

Once you've completed your mission, submit your MET and your total points won for the mission. Your score will be determined based on your total points and your MET for the mission. The shorter the MET and the higher the mission points, the better grade you get, and that could help you in the long run.

Leaderboard: (Name | Points | MET | Grade)

1. soranno | 40 | INCOMPLETE | N/A

Result from Round 0: (Name | Points | MET | Grade)

1. None yet.

Having a persistence file to download and run the challenge is a fine idea, however making it into a scenario might be the way to go.

I think that element is going to be attractive to most people if you can implement it, however

making mechjeb 2 a requirement for the challenge is going to turn A LOT of people off it.

making a rendezvous is not difficult anytime, if you know what you are doing, so people who don`t want MJ2, or just don`t have it most likely will not download it just to take part in this.

I can only suggest, remove that requirement and if you must use hyperedit or something to put the asteroids into space where you want them, and then upload the file as a scenario, and I`m certain this challenge will become very popular

Yeah, I'll try.

So I've tried to rendezvous with the asteroid I put into orbit, and mann, that was crazy...

First, the solid booster crashed to the rest of the rocket, resulting in a revert to the game save...

Then, when things went smoothly, I figured I forgot the ASAS! Once again resulting in a revert...

The third time I finally got to (and landed) on the asteroid. But apparently no gravity have been felt.

Anyway, the scenario pack would be uploaded sooner or later.

posting from work or I`d check it myself but..

I downloaded the one yesterday but was a bit hesitant about the part gravity, I`ve heard it can result in ships exploding somewhat more than usual, but I may try it with that anyway and not load my main save while the plugins are installed.

Is the new scenario pack you uploaded different from the previous thingy I downloaded?

EDIT: Incidentally, can`t access the new one

EDIT EDIT: going live to attempt this now http://www.twitch.tv/hoshizora

1. It didn't explode on my attempt, but for some reason after I switch scenes it just keeps teleporting the lander back to the last autosaved location.

2. I remember I set the control to all users, but apparently I didn't. Now I did.

And 3. No. It is not different from the previous one. I just stacked it into a scenario pack. The asteroid is not different, by the way. However I don't feel any gravitational pulls. I need to work on this issue a bit more. If it remains unsolved, the part gravity plugin might as well be dead by then.

EDIT: 3 Revised: Apparently the creator of the plugin forgot to change the parameters of the Part Gravity gravity parameters. I'll be working on it.

EDIT 2: Hmmm... maybe not having gravity would be better for some people.

EDIT 3: Just saw your video. Those life support is very annoying, as it kills Kerbals. Suggestion: A probe mission with RCS so that slow-rotation is near-impossible, and that it won't kills Kerbals... :D

I'm awarding you 20 points for attempting anyway.

EDIT 4: I'll try to do this. I lost the persistent because I changed the names... and was forced to delete EVEN before I ran KSP... :D I'll do a attempt anyway.

Kerbol Project Scenario Pack

Version: 0.1.1

CHANGLOG:

* Fixed banner problems.

* Added 1 scenario.

About the new scenario, well...

Today we have another discovery. This asteroid is found to be orbiting Kerbin at very high altitude and very elliptic orbit. This asteroid, formally classified as KA-29, is in an orbit that could, at any time, throws the asteroid out of Kerbin's reach for good... or until another encounter is made... :D So now, visit before it's gone!

New mission: Kerbin's New Moon. See OP for more detail.
