NASA JPL Scientists play KSP (With mods, of course) :)

Loved this article, especially the following part:

There's also a thriving mod scene that's constantly creating new devices and toys for players to tool around with. The game itself is somewhat barebones. It's exceedingly difficult to fly a mission to another planet without the help of the rocket parts and software created by the modding community. Some parts even have built-in telemetry tools that can automatically fire your engines for the proper amount of time and put you on the perfect heading. It might sound like cheating, but hey, NASA's got that mod too.

So,i guess NASA is cheating too...

If anyone tells you Mechjeb is cheating, you can say, "But... but NASA uses it all the time! You can't expect me to make North Korean Pluto V's without Mechjeb!". :).

I'm not with JPL, but I do work with JPL, on the Dawn mission. And I play KSP with mods too. What I do for a living actually led me to start making my mod, and although progress with other mods overtook my own (well done MC & Kethane!), I still want to see more science, and more "realism"; one of these days, I'll reboot my program again, and start using MC, Kethane, my own mod (!) and RemoteTech (plus MapSat of course).

The only thing missing is the ability to spot terminator crossings. If we could do that, then it would make camera mods more realistic.

Doesn't Dawn have an ion engine? Cause that must have a lot of delta-V.

Sure does. Fastest thing in the solar system, relative to Earth, if I remember. Where is Dawn Now?; as I write this now, we are currently travelling at 47 km/s relative to Earth, 19.2 km/s relative to the Sun. Oh! New Horizons is only going at 14km/s relative to the Sun. In your face New Horizons :D

How about Pioneer, isn't it still in solar system and going faster?

Apparently not. Voyager 1 is travelling at 17 km/sec relative to the Sun, Voyager 2 about 15 km/sec wrt Sun.

I'm loving this! So my answer to the myriad "Do you cheat?" threads is now, "I cheat as much as NASA does. Which is not at all."

The fastest manmade object is the Helios 2 probe.

True! Was not aware of this! We wondered if someone had done a close flyby of the Sun, although we would have done it just for the speed lol

Also, we had a discussion on this in our office, just after lunch, and came to the conclusion that every is relative :D

Fastest in relation to the sun and yes everything is relative :D

I suppose the biggest advantage in KSP for NASA is that at least here the Congress doesn't get to dictate them what kind of engines to use in their SLS aka Senate Launch System :)

I WANT a video of NASA playing with it ! It would be awesome if someone from there uses it to explain rocket science (basics parts) and advices player with their knowledge. Now that would be amazing.

But I still want to see a JPL man having fun with it ! :D

Lol, if NASA did a livestream of a KSP SLS launch and the Kraken attacked... it would be embarrassing, but funny.

But hey, it's still more successful than the N1. XD.

Well at least N1 did manage to get off the pad, unlike SLS :)

True, but the SLS is not even designed yet, and the N1's explosion was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in the history of mankind. In one BBC documentary, they even showed that the probe was stuck into the side of a reinforced bunker... :).

I might have a friend who could call him, but I don't want to creep him out.

You know, stranger just randomly calling to see if you want to play a game or not...
