They must be somewhere in the KSP files, probably in KSP_Data, and then someone found a way to take them out.

There's a Space Shuttle mission patch water mark on the front of their suits. I never noticed that before. what mission is it? can anyone tell?

Regarding the Shuttle patch...

Looks to be the patch from STS-115, resized slightly to be more circular.
