Saturn IX -- Sandpiper Lander (Subassembly Compatible)

Recommended Posts

Could you describe your workflow for building this thing? How did you keep all the parts accessible while building it?

Sure thing.

What I basically did was build the whole thing without any of the panels, then I added struts for stability, and then used panels and wing segments to cover up the functional bits.

Wow - what a beauty!! I will definitely be using the full Mun version for a tryout, and be using the lifter in the subassembly for lots of payloads!! I would like to try for Minmus with this, I will refuel the rockets in orbit, and see how it goes, but Duna may be out of my abilities for now!

Thank you for sharing this!

I was always using for badass lifter to get heavy stuff on kerbins orbit. was using Zenith Mk IX till now, which can carry like 50 ton, so im gonna give this a shot, edit it slightly for my needs and maybe i will be able to avoid KW rocktery again, that would be awsome.

Do you mind if I give this rocket a bit more publicity by having it be used by the fictitious company Verolan Space & Aeronautics Ltd. in Mekan1k's story, "Construction: A Journey to Space"? I know it's a sort of stupid question, but I wanted to ask just to be sure.

And that thing is stock..... (whatever the damn emoticon for speechless is)

What are the engines on the Whippoorwill? Aerospikes? NERVAs?

An unsuccessful trip to Laythe. I forgot to add parachutes to the lander and RCS to the CSM. I could live without the RCS, but without chutes, returning from Laythe was impossible.

Also, to answer your question, there are LV-Ns tucked away in the side-pods.

Huh. I just tried to launch the Saturn IX launch vehicle, and I was unable to due to the EPIC lag it caused. I have 36 flights active, and over 2 thousand parts, and this thing took me out.

Do you mind if I use, for the company Verolan Space & Aeronautics Ltd. in my AAR, the conceptual design, and give it a similar name? Fox62 should name it, as it would be part of his/her cannon. The issue is that with all the mods I use on the AAR, it is rather... Difficult to make super-high-part-designs, so I utilized the principles of your launcher to build something similar. I call it the MX launcher, and the tank it is pushing into orbit has a mas of 130 tons, and pushing it into a munar orbit (no pictures for that one, but it happened). It can get 200 tons into LKO.

Pictures!

This design was based off of your rather brilliant Saturn IX design, and I used it to put that massive tank into orbit. It is part-minimized, for maximum efficiency, and all the extraneous parts are cut out, so it looks a bit bare-bones.

Thanks for the concept- It will streamline part of my upcoming story.

I'm assuming you didn't forget parachutes on the CSM?

Nah, I remembered those. I've not been to Laythe much, so I was working under the assumption that if I could make a powered landing on Duna and return, I would be able to do it on Laythe. This turned out to be a faulty assumption.

Sorry it couldn't work out for you. It is a bit of a lag-beast on launch. Especially for me, since I have an i3 laptop. What's the largest fuel tank diameter in the mods you use?

Wow Mekan1k, that's a pretty awesome rocket!! I hope you will share the craft files if you can!

I have just tried the Saturn IX fully equipped, and had no problems with it. No Lag, but I have an i7 & 16GB Ram PC, and the ship behaved like a purring kitten! I did notice that every few times I tired to launch it exploded, structural failure issues. I will have to play with the gimbals and see what works best.

But I was using the Munbug series rockets before, and they were near impossible to get up. This one totally blows them away in its launch and orbit capabilities. I never had enough fuel to achieve a circular orbit with the Munbug (When I was able to get it into orbit!), but the Saturn IX slid right into orbit with fuel to spare! I am getting ready to head to Mun and look forward to it!

Thanks for sparing me the frustration I had with other rockets!

I think it is the simpler (and much fewer) rocket designs that really shine, this one was brilliantly made and I will use it a lot for lots of trips!

Great Job and thank you Gusturbo and OKB-1 Design Bureau!! I will look for your work in the future. I Dl'ed the Mini N and Munstosity and will play around with those!

I actually haven't touched any of these craft since .21 came out. I was able to work with higher part count rockets in .20, but now they really slow things down to a pace where it's difficult to test them out.
