Kerpollo XVII (low part count)

Recommended Posts

Seems like the collective will is leaning twards Apollo style lander builds. And I will admit that my craft falls quite a bit short from some, aesthetically speaking (OMG Mulbin!!! your Munbug is BOSS), but alas my poor computer cannot handle much more than 200 parts at a time without becoming unenjoyable. So , I did my best with what I have to work with, and this is what I came up with.

I'd like to present the Kerpollo XVII:

LATEST Kerpollo 17 .craft file>>http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/kerpollo-17 *latest improvements include wider stance lander legs- Working ABORT- EVEN LESS PARTS!(194)

This craft is all stock parts, and it mirrors the mission of Apollo 17, Same number of stages, same number of engines, with an approx. equivalent of delta-v, and a rover (actually 2). On the actual mission the rover was dropped and winched to the moon surface, and was assembled from 2 parts.

"Launched at 12:33 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on December 7, 1972, with a three-member crew consisting of Commander Eugene Cernan, Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans, and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt, Apollo 17 remains the most recent manned Moon landing and the most recent crewed flight beyond low Earth orbit."- from Apollo 17 Wiki article http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_17

Good idea WooDzor :) .

Here is an updated craft file: http://www./download/rqg90gv1s16qpgx/Kerpollo_17_redux.craft

The Rover got a make-over. Now with: Bigger battery, Anti-turtle leg, Wheels positioned for optimal stability, single piece I beam construction, and less parts altogether. I also omitted the dish, and replaced It with regular (less obtrusive) antenna.

Part count was reduced to exactly 200 parts.

Here is the subassembly file for just the rover: http://www./download/jyw45dy4gy5c4dy/BESTROVEREVR.craft

Time to circularize and start our Munar injection:

Halfway through munar injection burn we run out of fuel, and must stop to reconfigure ship:

We use the command pod's engine to finish our TMI, and to circularize around the mun at an altitude of about 15km:

Transfer crew to the Munar lander module:

De-orbit, decelerate and prepare for landing:

Not having ASAS on the lander makes for a challenge. Fine controls are a must. Make no mistake about it, this is a challenging mission!

But persist and you will be victorious!:

Redock with command module, transfer crew and remaining fuel to command pod, and undock for the ride home in the Command pod:

Burn Prograde out of munar orbit when on the correct side of the mun to bring your Kerbin Pe to 33Km or less and burn remaining fuel retrograde once in atmosphere:
