Looking to extend the KSP experience without sacrificing limits

Hey, i've been playing KSP for a while and am (of course) loving it and while i like a challenge, "Just" setting down on a planet gets a bit, well sort of hollow at some point.

I'm looking for mods to expand my ksp, to add utility, possibilities and generally things to do.

The only reason i've not done so, so far, is because i fear reducing difficulty.

By that, i mean for example:

Fuel tanks with more fuel per ton or more fuel per m3 than stock

Engines with better thrust/weight ratio or better Isp than stock

Magic items (resources out of nothing, things that generally defy thermodynamic laws in respect to energy conversion)

well, you get the idea

Does anyone know of a mod or several that match this?

Modular Fuel System, Deadly Reentry, and Ferram Aerospace Research are all excellent. Admittedly, most of what they do is add difficulty (lots of it), but hey.

RemoteTech, Figaro GPS, and IonCross Life Support also add difficulty.
