Things you've become good at because you are terrible at something else.

Skycranes.

Early on I was absolutely terrible at landing any kind of payload with only a single downwards facing engine. As a result I started sticking a crap load of legs and support items on the belly of my landers and had the engines mounted on it's sides. That later evolved into a legit skycrane system.

Now I can stick regular single engine landings, but I still resort to using skycranes whenever I can. Now I'm just constantly looking for new multi stage abominations to create to see just how heavy of a payload I can land with them, my tiny rover and probe cranes look relatively normal but my landers tend to look like something out of Jeb's wet dreams.

Impromptu designs. I am an absolut idiot in testing my designs.

today I tried to land a hitch hiker storage container with 3 legs a ladder and some lights on the Mun.. with on top a fuel tank and 4 radial engines. (after descent I wanted to release the system, fire it up once again and ditch it somewhere else).

about a one and a half kilometer above the targeted landing site (I wanted to land somewhere above a Kethane supply and as close to a arch so I had little choice choosing my landing site) my descent stage was empty.I ditched it and fired up my 4 radial engines on my powered landing stage..... WHOAH my entire ship went haywire and started spinning. 800 meters, 700 meters. Quickly i disabled the 2 engines pointing north and south. 300, 200, 125 meters till touchdown.. Descent speed, 20..10...0...5.

This happens to me all the time. whenever I plan a long, long... Long mission I always mess up the staging. Nowadays I check trice before pressing the spacebar.

I'm pretty good at building bases from small components, simply because I really really suck at minimalist engineering.

For example, my recent thought process for a kethane drill on minmus went like this:

Right, so I'll need a drill, kethane storage and a converter obviously. I don't want to drag all that back into orbit all the time so I'll add a docking port for a tanker. I'm going to need some power so I'll need some solar panels, battery arrays and the kethane generator. Hmm, I also use remotetech so I'll need some form of communications tower... And all these segments need to be linked so I'll need some connector segments. What if I lose LOS with Kerbin? Better add some living space so the drill functions as a command base and I can always land and control the thing. Hmm, but I use Ioncross crew support. I better add in a few oxygen tanks and a recycler to keep the green guys from suffocating. Hey, when I have kerbals here anyway I better add a rover so they can drive around a bit. I'll need a rover to assemble all the pieces anyway...

Etc etc. And eventually what was intended as a simple refueling drill ends up being a 400 part base.

Since I have no idea how to dock (tried building a station before, got about 3 km to my target and didn't know what to do at that point anyway) I have to be able to launch large payloads into space without building it in orbit. The largest thing I've ever successfully launched was a Mun colony that houses 15 kerbals and a rover. I had to restart twice because it kept on breaking during the gravity turn but I eventually made it. I'm currently working on a new colony ship that houses 27 kerbals, but it's a challenge.
