How to change which command pod is active, through the .Craft files.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Simple problem here, but I couldnt find an answer to it. I have a ship with two command pods, and I need to switch which one is active, and comes with the crew, but I don't know what to edit in the .Craft file to do that.

Also, please dont tell me about how in version .20 you can change the command pod and all that, I know, but i can't delete either of the pods because they are the backbones of large structures. I just need to change which one comes with the crew in it.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I don't know how to change in craft, but I asume your problem is that the pod you want active is the only one pointing in the right direction.

You can work around this problem if you put a probe body on the rocket that's also pointing in the right direction. You can switch crew while in orbit.

Or you could swap crew while on the launch pad, if you add ladders to connect the doors

There is no simple answer. I've not seen, anywhere on the forums, a description of how the craft files are laid out. (If anyone knows where to find this, please tell me.) I've tried changing the order of the parts in them, but that doesn't seem to work. I know that logically, in code, crafts are trees, with a root part and branches for each attached part, so to change which one is root requires reordering the whole tree.

I'd install and use the Crew Manifest plugin. With it, you can transfer Kerbals from one part of your vessel to another.

Well im wanting to release this build to everyone on the forums, as it's a hyper-realistic Apollo landing module, but I don't want them to have to worry about staring off with the crew in the lander. Theres only two crew members available that way, plus their in the wrong part of the ship at liftoff. The real apollo mission had 3 crew and they started in the Mk1 command pod.

That's what I need to switch. I want to set the Mk1 command pod to be the Main pod in the ship, while having the lander can as an additional, empty command pod.

bumping for lack of answers.... anyone know how to do this?

The answer IS to "rebuild" your craft. You have the wrong root part and you need to re-piece it together. At the very least you will need to disconnect everything from the lander can and remove it. Then disconnect everything from the pod and remove it. Then add back each in reverse order and connect everything together. The ingame craft editor is the best tool for this.

I had to go through the same process to fix a rover I made so I could put it in sub-assembly loader.
