The Origins of the Kerbin Terrain.

Hey guys! After scouting around for maps that I could use for my sci-fi story, I came across a map that was awkwardly similar to Kerbin. It has a few differences but I believe this was the original map used by Squad to make Kerbin (they did tweak it though). The name of the planet is Cytheria

honestly confirmed for no troll. there was me thinking you were trying to link us to questionable content, but Tuna was right!

EDIT: had a look into that celestia screenshot; celestia 1.3.1 was released back in '04. kerbin is 9 years old!

ok someone is gonna have to take over from the libnoise page - i reckon if someone can work out how to compile that "complexplanet.cpp" file from this (http://libnoise.sourceforge.net/downloads/examples.zip) and then use it in some program, we can get some more screenshots out. i think this page is the source of kerbin, since it claims it generated the map.

Copies are really easy to find, just drag the map image to google image search and you'll get dozens of hits.

There are 2 options:

1 - It is a royalty free image, SQUAD mirrored it and called it Kerbin.

2 - SQUAD created it and others are using it with or without permissions. If the latter is true SQUAD really has it's work cut out.

It's an open source noise map. Squad mirrored it and called it Kerbin, and have since then tweaked it.
