Can't figure out cargo bays

So I've tried multiple cargo bays and for the life of me, I can't figure out how to stick anything in them.

Do I just use struts to secure the item? If that's the case, how do I release the payload from the bay once in orbit?

I'm just confused or having a stupid moment.

Hi, is this using a mod, or the stock game?

You generally want to attach payloads via docking clamps if you want to be able to retrieve them later. right-clicking the docking clamp will allow you to decouple or release the payload.

Yeah, I don't think stock has any kind of dedicated cargo bay piece. The closest would be simply docking it to your ship, the inline clamp-o-tron also kind of looks like a cargo bay, but since it's shielded inside the VAB, that means you can't put anything onto it until you launch it.
