Perpendicular Kerbal Orbit to Mun and Back

Recommended Posts

The title may be a bit misleading and I may need some of the more experienced kerbanauts to assist. But the challenge I set forth is for your to launch your Spacecraft from Kerbal perform a single orbit of an inclination 90 or 270 (+/- 2 degrees) and then perform an LOI on the same inclination with the result of orbiting the Mun with the same 90 or 270 degree inclination after arriving. I think the difficulty here is timing it perfectly to come into the Mun\'s SOI at the right angle to end up in the perpendicular obit. Let me know your thoughts Kerbal Nation! I will follow up later with my attempts after work.

Wait, you mean transfer from a polar Kerbin orbit to a polar Munar orbit? ??? ???

I\'d like to see that, but I think any successes would be pretty much blind luck without better instrumentation. The Mun moves so fast that you would have to get the trans-munar injection burn AND the launch time perfect. You\'d have to be awfully consistent in your launch profile, too.

I\'m pretty sure I couldn\'t do it without planning it in STK first.

(Oh wow, there\'s a free version of satellite tool kit -- I\'ve never tried to set up a custom solar system before, I wonder if that\'s possible?)

Yea I can understand without better instrumentation that it would be difficult, but when have the Kerbals ever turned down a challenge that didn\'t have a 'luck' component to it?
