What would be a good, FREE, modeling software?

I'm looking into making custom parts to make the Battlestar Kerbalia, and want the pieces made personally for me with decals, so I figured rather than hiring one of you to do it, I can do it how I would like it. But I request that you give me some tips on good freeware for modeling, and won't kill my 06 XP computer that needs skype and steam closed to simply browse the forums.

Also, maybe some tips on code, because I know hardly anything about scripting.

Blender is what I use,I would show you what I did with it but I'm at vacation at "Vysoké Tatry"(bonus points if you can spell that properly) and I'm at my second computer and I do not have any models here. But it's free and pro.

Same here, Blender rocks.

Just to drive home the point being made here...Blender is going to be the best

Blender is, essentially, a freeware version of 3DSMax. Just like Gimp is a freeware version of Photoshop. They both do at least 90% of the functions of their paid-for counterparts.

Completely accurate. Not that I could ever figure out how to use Blender properly.

Blender certainly has a steep learning curve, but once you've mastered some basic keystrokes and workflows, you'll be able to do just about anything.

Steep? I picked up blender in about 30 minutes. Youtube is your friend.

I picked up Blender in around 30~40 minutes as well, although that was due to prior experience poking in other 3D graphics and CAD software with similar workflows. YMMV otherwise applies for everyone else.

3d modeling is one of those 'easy to learn, hard to master' things. Sure you can learn how to make basic shapes in 30mins to an hour. But it'll take a lot more than that to become proficient at it. :)

If you think Blender is bad, you should try using zmodeler. I only have experience with Max type software, so when i was forced to use zmodeler for a specific project (only software with appropriate plugin) i wanted to pull my hair out..lol
