Will WINE work with Steam games?

So, I've just gotten Linux all set up and ready after about a month of distro deliberation and i've gotten the WINE Windows emulator installed. What I want to know is will WINE work with the games downloaded through Steam? I want to know because I don't want to spend a week downloading a game (Yes, I have a crappy connection) just to find it won't work.

check the Wine application database and see if the game you're interested works. Whenever it works or not depends of the program, but the general rule is: no, it won't work, and if it works it won't be at same performance of Windows.

edit: Steam supports linux though, so if you have games that have linux support (such as many Valve games and KSP) then you don't need Wine.
