Are the Iain m. Banks books worth getting Into?

I've read about a third of consider phelbas, then one of my friends told me that Harry turtle dove is a good author. So I went off to read him.

My impressions of consider phelbas was that I liked most of the characters, but the constant lack of hardness was getting to me.

I've read all the song of ice and fire books, but I severely doubt Iain m. Banks can dethrone G.R.R.M on my council of the best writers (he is on there for rich world and good characters)

If you like space opera, then Banks is (was) one of the best. I wouldn't say Phlebas is his finest work, but it is a good introduction to the Culture. Stick with them and you should find yourself rewarded.
