What Hohmann Transfer is better: Duna -> Kerbin, or Ike -> Kerbin?

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on doing my first manned landing and return on Ike, and I am wondering if it is better to do the interplanetary Hohmann Transfer from Ike, or if spending the extra Delta-V to get to Duna, to do a Hohmann Transfer there will make up for it?

Sink your Pe right above Duna's atmosphere and burn for Kerbin. Remember the Oberth Effect? :)

That's what I would do, but I am wondering if a low Pe on Duna is worth burning the extra Delta-V to get there, or if just burning at a low Pe on Ike will do.

This. I've never done the math on Duna/Ike, but I've made that trip, and done the math for Minmus/Kerbin to Duna (and other) transfers, and boosting out of Minmus orbit into an orbit with a low Kerbin periapsis and high apoapsis and then doing a transfer burn at periapsis was much more efficient than going for an interplanetary transfer directly from Minmus/Ike. The timing can be tricky on those kinds of transfers, but just Duna to Kerbin shouldn't be hard at all.

If you have to burn to lower your PE, then it may not be worth it. You may get back to Kerbin, or maybe not. I'd say just burn at your PE without lowering it, if you're low on fuel. If you have plenty to spare, go for it. Otherwise it's two steps forward after one step back.
