Can I have some help with level 1 RAID?

Recommended Posts

So, I have an internal hard drive and an external (USB) hard drive that I want to link together in a level 1 RAID array. I can get a USB to SATA converter if necessary, but I'd prefer being able to do it without spending any money. I've looked up ways to do it, but I have only found how to link two internals, or two USBs, but not one of each.

I am running windows Vista, on an ASUS motherboard.

What version of Vista? Hardware RAID is not going to be possible with that setup, but you might be able to setup a software RAID through windows if you have Pro or Ultimate. You aren't planning on using the proposed array for anything else other than file storage are you?

It's 32-bit Home Premium, and you are correct, I am not using it for anything more than file storage (more specifically a backup).

Well then it depends on the software/drivers of the external device. Some present themselves to windows as standard disk which windows would let you convert it to a dynamic disk. But I think most USB devices report themselves as a removable drive. You can probably do it with a SATA converter though. I was going to test this, but unfortunately my Esata enclosure seems to have walked off...

Google turned this up www.flexraid.com

Thanks, I'm trying to figure out how to use it (the wiki says one thing, but the files say another. It downloaded as an .exe, but the wiki says it should have been a .zip and a completely different name :().
