is a docking cube possible?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to make a modular construction that can be changed and have parts moved about. A docking cubes makes that very possible;

Only thing is that is 7 parts just to do that one job and many of the ports will not be used at the same time (and I need to also keep part count down). I could make joints that are custom made with just the right number of ports but that limits the flexibility to move sections around later.

So Is there such and thing that could do the same job but is a single part? Is it even possible to have a single part that has multiple docking connections?

wow... this is indeed a very good mod part idea

a six way docking port in a single part.

but let's make it even better... a 6-way docking port with built in monopropellent storage and octahedrally placed RCS thrusters and has an integrated probe core with built in RTG...all in one part.

and i am calling it... the Omnicore

You don't want to stuff too many things in one part, though. That takes all the fun out of building. I definitely like the idea of a 6-way docking port, however.

It's been done before.

Could I suggest that it would be called "the weighted companion cube"! ;)

I do agree with Kimberly thou, putting too many things into a single part does take the fun out of building. In the thing I'm building I really wouldn't want an RTG, I'm building a station that has high power demands but I want it to run on solar panels when in light and use the Kethane power generator at night, so I will have a need to keep my station stocked with kethane.

It's been done before.

I think that has more parts than my folding rover! Also, are you trying to illuminate space? That's got more lights than a rednecks pickup truck! ;)

[edit - cos is Saturday and brain is full of goo]

But the question which I guess only a modder could answer is if its actually possible. I fear that it wouldn't be possible cos of the way docking ports have been designed as single parts, I don't know if the code could deal with separate docking ports as a single part.

True it is a lot of lights... but it would make finding your target port much easier no?

As to your edit, what I was thinking as instead of a multi port like this, have the top of the MK1-2 command module or the multi-point connector here which look suspiciously like docking ports actually be docking ports.

Edit- BTW love the way your lifter launches in your clubbing on mun video.
