So, i'm trying cycles

two things

how do adjust specular levels

and how do i get the scenes to be not so dark?

here's an example

Watch some tutorials. Andrew Price has some good ones. Glad you're using cycles. BI is no longer being developed. It will stay in Blender, but don't ever expect it to be updated.

so... basically, i should forget EVERYTHING i know about 3D, except for modeling, and start over....

Well, back to BI.

If you gave Cycles some attention you'd understand that you can get similar results with both engines with little difference. Get rid of your irrational fear of new and unfamiliar technology. With an attitude like that, you're going to learn nothing fast. It's like me refusing to use Photoshop because it has different keyboard shortcuts than paint.

Not only that, you're shooting yourself in the foot when the new stuff gets some additional lovin' that results in it being easier to use, while the others who doggedly stick only to what they know continue to slog through the mud simply to avoid having to learn something new.

I used to have the same kind of opinion about Illustrator. Photoshop and Illustrator share some of the same tools and functions, but their keyboard shortcuts and behaviors are totally different, even though Adobe has owned both for many years now. I was getting angry with Adobe on principle alone, seeing an update progression (or lack thereof) that seemed to mirror their ignorant and lazy approach with Flash and Acrobat. I wasn't willing to deal with trying to come to terms with Illustrator's differences simply to gain access to vector image development, when I could achieve similar results with little additional effort in Photoshop anyway.

Then my day job started distributing construction plans in pdf format, editable only in Illustrator from my end, and I had to adapt. I still don't like it that much, but I have to admit I've been able to get the results I need with it, where my preferred standard is unable to compete.

The moral is that you can stay in your comfort zone all you like, but when it gets dropped in favor of something else, one way or another you're eventually going to be forced kicking and screaming into it in order to achieve something you need, whether it's a personal requirement or part of your paid work.

It happens all the time, just look at the people who considered Windows 98 to be the endgame for them. The ones that continue to hold out really aren't doing so hot these days. >_<

Tutorials exist for a reason.

Oh... A mix node, a glass node and my diffuse... Interesting...

Well, back to BI, the Better render engine... Well... cycles is pretty nice...

I'm conflicted...

Oh, here's a whine glass i made in cycles

KtPRQL2.png

get it? a whine glass?

fine...

i'll revive...

wait...

no.

Someone else can do it for a change.

also heres the hard surface modeling of the stock 2 stage lander, it's fully hand modeled i tried to rip the models from ksp but found its far quicker and more rewarding to model it my self.pwhciss.jpg

and heres a video of it

Well, it may be a little bit yet before it's done. I'm working on versions of it with and without the suit, and I'm currently having trouble with the rigging portion of it as well. From there, it's the nightmare of texturing that will keep me up late at night. :/

so whats the status on the kerbal?

<vid snip>

A test with particle systems. Planning for a explosion. Version 01

Planning to have the ground "deform". Also, should I make the particles dissapear after landing?

That looks pretty good for simply particles.

Heres a bit of advice if you use blender.

Have something being broken apart.

Here's one I threw together.

So, whatever is causing the explosion needs to throw little bits of itself EVERYWHERE.

Have the ground deform with shape-keys, and a wave modifier.

And lastly... do some cool sound effects.

Time to save the thread... again...

Here's an update on what i've been doing in cycles.

I still don't fancy cycles... but i'm getting better at it.

I made a new Blade for him

UnaKZY9.png

It's designed so it can spin around the ring on the handle, and it can also be gripped on the middle handle.

Wow, those look amazingly awesome.

the textures on the Mun landing on seem a bit... stretched,

And that is some awesome looking grass.

I'm currently working on an animation, should be done in... a few days... I hope...

Why is no one posting to this thread anymore? have you guys truly given up on it?

Im getting a drawing tablet so I should be able to do models easier. But I just don't have a powerful enough laptop to render any modes like yours rewdew2.

But my brother said I'll get a pc for christmas. But He said that last time..

I have experience modeling in GMAX and Sketchup I'm thinking about trying my had at animation in Blender. I want to ask some things but I'm not sure if this is the right place...

So I'll ask anyway... How hard is animation once the modeling is done? And does anything special need to be done to the model to animate it?

I figure I would ask here because later I could post pics of my attempts. :P

Well, if you plan on moving the whole object, you don't need to do anything.

if it's for a character with bending limbs, you're going to need to set it to an armature, which is easy.

for mouth movements you're going to have to set up shape keys, but those are also pretty easy.

You say easy but how long have you been doing animations? I never have and have only done model which render 2D...
