What do it mean in the context of mods? Forgive my ingorance. :)

It means someone other than original creator has made an alternate versioin of the same basic code.

Infernal Robotic is technically a fork of Damned Robotics (or at least started as such).

Think of it like the old saying "a fork in the road" ya =)
