Orbital Inclination

Recommended Posts

To dock with a ship returning from the Mün, i noticed that my orbital inclination has changed (it's not straight over the 90° degrees line above the KSC = equator).

Now i was wondering, is there a way how to know (some mod, or add-on), to which extend i need to burn to reset my orbital inclinations?

If you're trying to rendezvous with another ship, select it as your "target" in Map mode; that will show you the relative inclination with your current orbit. Tnen you can set a Maneuver Node (click on your orbital track, select "Set Maneuver") at either the Ascending or Descending Node shown on the map. Pull the thrust arms out and play around with them until the nodes show "0" or "NaN" for degrees.

The maneuver node system works for this. by burning at zenith or nadir you can raise or lower your inclination, of which you can see the effects by using the maneuver nodes. I believe the symbols are a purple triangle/ square (the shapes may not be correct, but I know its purple). you will also want to burn slightly retrograde or you will be adding velocity.

Mechjeb will tell you using its maneuver node planner. You can calculate it yourself using trigonometry:

delta_V_for_inclination_change = 2 * current_velocity * sin(desired_change_in_inclination / 2)

Example:

At 100 km circular Kerbin orbit, you're going 2246 m/s. To change your inclination by 10 degrees, it would take:

2 * 2246 m/s * sin(10 degrees / 2) = 391.5 m/s
