I was in Navy Officer Candidate School with one of these guys (Victor Glover) in 2000 and saw him again when I was doing bridge watches on USS Enterprise and he was training to be an F-18 pilot. Small world.

<grin> I was actually amazed at how little Star Trek fandom touched my time on the Enterprise. There was, if I recall correctly, a signed poster from the Next Generation cast outside the CO's office, which he would occasionally grumble about, but that's about it.
