So I've tried it in the past.

In 0.18 I managed to make a gigantic SSTO that BARLEY got to orbit, and needed to be refueled in orbit to go places. Then in 0.19 I made a "Rocket ssto" for carrying payloads. Still I never made a SSTO that could make a good orbit and return without refuling- and being practical. Thanks to B9, I have finally done it!
