My first shot at a small Goal pack, Great for begginers!

Recommended Posts

So in anticipation of career mode I wanted to start making some mission packs for you guys and myself to try. This first one is gonna be great for beginners as I focused on more basic missions for my first pack. I also am gonna be adding sub-goals within a mission that you can get points for to make it more interesting for more seasoned players and add a little competition. I would love to see your guy's shot at this pack the only thing I ask is screen shots of your missions as proof. If I get enough submissions I will edit the post to include a leader board! I will be making my own submissions through youtube videos that I will upload as I complete them. If you notice any mistakes I might have over looked or got ideas for my next pack (which I will try to put one out every other week till career mode is released) then feel free to let me know. So enough rambling and here is the Beginners Pack. Enjoy! :)

A word of warning for newcomers trying this: goal #4 is one of the more difficult tasks to accomplish in this game. It is substantially more difficult than landing on and returning from the Mun. In fact, a lot of us veterans recommend that you use interplanetary missions - such as Duna - as practice for learning how to dock. Those of you working your way through this list for the first time should skip #4 (or at least move it to after #5). Don't get discouraged if you don't figure it out right away.

As an aside, I have an idea for how to make a challenge like this more interesting for veterans: how many of these goals can you accomplish in a single launch without refueling? Goals must be completed individually, in order, working your way down the list, and you may not check off multiple goals at once (so, if you put yourself in orbit during the "sub-orbital" portion of the challenge, it does not count for both goals). Goals 1&2 should be done unmanned, then load a Kerbal for goal 3. For goal 4, have a station already in orbit to dock with. Total score is the sum of all point totals for individual missions. (A perfect score will include making orbit at least four times without refueling, plus two suborbital hops, docking, and a trip to the Mun. That should be enough to challenge most veterans.)

That would be one epic flight! haha!

Well, here's the rocket for the first goal on the launchpad:

It's 3 parts, plus a parachute if necessary. I'm trying to do it without the chute though.

After liftoff, performing a small course correction:

I reached 10km, and I'm on my way down. Looks like I'll have just enough fuel for a landing without the chute:

Well, I landed successfully, but I needed the parachute. I ran out of fuel at about 400m:

Point Total:

Above 10km: +100pts

Kerbal Survived: +150pts

TOTAL: 250

Overall, not bad. At 400m, the chute couldn't slow the craft down enough to a safe velocity, so the engine and tank exploded. If the parachute doesn't counts as a part, it's +300, but I believe it does, so no bonus for me. 250 isn't bad though. k_smiley.gif

So, I designed a new satellite to complete this mission. I'll show you the old one thats already in orbit later, but here's the mission design:

Here it its during the ascent:

In the meantime, here's my other satellite. It's also the one that I used to speed up the 100 days:

TOTAL SCORE:

Successful Orbit: +100

Polar Orbit: +250

Successfully de-orbited +500

TOTAL: 850

Overall, I feel that the mission was a complete success! I didn't really want to do it in all one stage, because I don't think it's very efficient. I was able to successfully de-orbit using only rcs, and the satellite splashed down completely intact. There was no way I was going to land within 5km of KSC, so I didn't even try. It was loads of Fun! off to the next missionk_smiley.gif

So, after a bunch of school work, I finally got around to doing the third goal: an orbit.

I decided to put this one in an album. Just thought it'd be easier.

Javascript is disabled. View full album

SCORE:

Successful Orbit: +100

Above 100km +150

Lanson Kerman Survived +200

TOTAL: 450

Overall, not terrible considering I've never even tried to land close to KSC. Not great, but I only gave it one try, so now there's room for improvement.

Today I did goal#4. I tried launching 4 Kerbals into orbit and landing them within 5km of KSC but i end up over shooting the landing but it was still a very fun mission to do. Sorry the album has alot of images since it was 4 separate launches. To summarize i launched the first kerbal with a docking port node on top so the other pods could dock. Then for the second launch i send a pod with RCS tanks, thusters, battery, and a computer to act as a "space tug". Then the last two launches were just getting a pod into orit grabbing it with the tug then attaching it to the node. Once all pods were attached i de-orbited the ship and landed in the ocean with parachutes.

Scoring:

Successful Dock 100Pts

Both Manned Missions 150Pts

Transfer Crew in orbit and land one payload back on the surface 300pts

Total: 550 Pts (would have been so much more if I just landed closer!)
