So I don't know what dark rock I've been living under... or maybe its just not common knowledge..

But I just found out about Star Citizen the other day, and it looks amazing! If you haven't seen anything about it, go to their main website and watch the video. Scott Mansley also has a few videos talking about it.

The only downside I see to the game? it might melt my $3000.00 computer....

but then again, so does KSP with more then 400 parts...

I backed it the day it was available to back.

Not sure if alot of you kids played wing commander or any of the series, but Chris pretty much changed an entire generations way of thinking about producing video games. Wing commander 3 for example (with mark hamil lol)

Not only did he bring the production aspect to it, he also made them GOOD GAMES!! at the time the graphics were outstanding for any PC game. Pre-rendered ships back then where the way to go, and he did such a good job of it.

I have faith in Star citizen as a game, but as a money making prostitute of the game industry, it's going to be a very rough ride for Star Citizen. Most average folk can't afford to insure their car in real life, I can't see many insuring they virtual spaceship for similar costs.

Did you see the $10,000 DLC pack you can buy?

10,000 dollars cmon people, that's just beyond disgusting, especially when they are up to 17 million made through kickstarter.

Please people, read carefully the above link.

There is no "pay to win" in this game.

All purchases you can do for now is just a way to fund the project, and it is purely optional.

You can just go with the minimum package to access the alpha, all other ships, goodies will be purchasable with ingame credits later on.

Just to clarify things here. ;)

Some people are willing to do it. When enough people decide "Ah, why not, this could be fun to play" and chip in for those $125 dollar ships, it adds up to being enough to actually develop the game. As mentioned, it's only $35 for the basic package that gives you the full game and the default starter ship, plus access to the alpha and beta testing phases.

You're also getting two games, not just one. The Squadron 42 campaign is a WC style single/~ player campaign (MP is optional - think Borderlands, where friends can hop in and be wingmen in your campaign playthrough) which is going to be large - I think they were up to like 38 or 48 missions. Then you're getting the actual online sim, Star Citizen, with all the nitty gritty online interaction.

I'm stoked about it. I really wish I hadn't thrown so much money into it, though T_T. Stupid Idris's.

  • 1 month later...

There is a option to throw in 4€ without any kind of reward just like "shut up and take my money" style. I do that that I roll a dice every day and when i get numbers 4 or 2 (squadron 42) I send then 4€. I do it like this because I dont want to get those extra ships. I'll be buying them ingame as most ppl will anyway.

So again there is no pay to win at all, and I've never been hyped about any game like this before. I'm actually planning to get new rig for SC, oculus rift and new hotas to be deeply immersed.

It looks awesome, but... do they really expect you to shell out $125 for a virtual spaceship?

Nope! If you want, you can wait until the game launches, buy the game for $60, then play and get absolutely everything any of the backers have got, and never invest another cent into the game. Chris made it really really clear that he didn't want pay-to-win; everything that can be bought with real life money can be earned in game. The only reason ships cost money now is so that the game can get made. Chris said awhile back that the RSI Constellation, which is a medium-sized 4-player merchant ship with turrets and missiles and a snub fighter, which costs $225 right now, can be earned with roughly 60 hours of gameplay.

$125 seems a bit much but maybe that'll go down. People were more than willing to pay $30 for Microsoft Flight Simulator and then spend an additional $500 on the various add-ons, so why not?
