As I've heard Felipe and Adrian discuss it over the several conversations we've had, we don't really fit the traditional alpha/beta model. If you had to shoehorn it into that, you would need two separate alpha/beta groupings. While yes, the project as a whole meets the traditional Alpha definition as we never started with a plan of the current scope, the software you are playing right now is more of a late Beta as the project goals are solidifiying. The true alpha version is the nightly builds that QA test. The beta builds would be the ones we issue to the Experimental team. Then we release a final beta to the public.

We like to call this state "Sandbox complete", meaning it could be polished off and released as a Sandbox-only game. Since we obviously have much more planned, development is ongoing and we are allowing the public to follow along.
