Your rocket design philosophy

Recommended Posts

1. Capsule + parachute

2. Liquid fuel + engine (orbit)

3. Liquid fuel + engine frame (other stages)

4. MUST HAVE MORE BOOSTERS

5. Does it fly? How does it fly? Add wings, S.A.S.and struts depending on performance.

6. Does it reach orbit? No? MUST HAVE MORE BOOSTERS

7. Does it have enough fuel to get to Mun and/or orbit and back on the planet? No? Alter step 2, then redo steps 5-7 until perfection.

This is my build procedure:

1: Build the top stage.

2: Test the top stage.

3: Does it work?

If yes, continue.

If no, fix it or get more practice.

This continues until I finish it. At that point, I test it.

Testing Procedure:

1: Do the mission.

2: When finished, remove unnecessary components.

3: Repeat.

I. Set goal.

II. Can this goal be reached with a vehicle that is in my arsenal?

If yes, use that vehicle. If no, continue.

III. Build vehicle.

1. Does it explode on the pad?

If yes, fix it. If no, continue.

2. Does it get off the pad?

If no, get an engine with more thrust. Flavor with solid boosters, to taste. If no, continue.

3. Is it stable between 0-20,000 m without RCS, SAS, ASAS, or winglets?

If no, add at least one SAS unit. If yes, skip to step 7.

4. Is it stable between 0-20,000 m without RCS, ASAS, or winglets?

If no, swap out one SAS unit for an ASAS unit. If yes, skip to step 7.

5. Is it stable between 0-20,000 m without RCS or winglets?

If no, add winglets. If yes, skip to step 7.

6. Is it stable between 0-20,000 m without RCS?

If no, add more RCS fuel, toggle RCS during launch. If yes, skip to step 7.

7. Does it get into orbit?

If no, go to step 8. If yes, skip to step 9.

8. Determine the cause of failure in step 7.

a. Is it too heavy?

If yes, improve thrust-to-weight ratio. Repeat step 7. If no, go to b.

b. Does it have enough fuel?

If no, add more fuel. Repeat step 7. If yes, go to c.

c. Can it reach orbital velocity?

If no, try an engine with more thrust. If yes, start from scratch.

9. Can it perform the objective to reach the goal?

If yes, good job! Optimize rocket, add to arsenal. If no, try again.

I don\'t care about the design, only about the effectiveness, also trying to do stuff with as less fuel as possible, my lander for example flies by itself to the moon, lands and goes back with no additional parts helping, besides the parts who get it into orbit ofcourse.

This was from my last rocket.

Stage 1: Capsule+Parachute+Escape tower

Stage 2: RCS+ASAS+Fuel and rocket for deorbit burn

Stage 3: Big fuel tank+1 rocket for orbit changing.

Stage 4: Radial solid rocket boosters+3 tricouplers

Stage 5: 10 rockets; 1 medium tank each.

Stage 6: MORE TRICOUPLERS

Stage 7: Radial solid rocket boosters

Stage 8: 12 BIG HONKING ROCKETS and 1 medium tank each.

My general theory is to change anything after stage 2 if I can make it better. Solutions are often more tri/quad/penta couplers and extra radial solid rockets.

Guest GroundHOG-2010

1. Find a craft that worked.

2. modify it.

3. See if it still works or works better.

If yes then go to step 10

If not then go to step 4

4. Rebuild craft completly to do what I want

5. Test.

6. Does it work?

If yes then go to step 7

If not then go to step 4

7. Build it bigger

8. Does it still work

If yes go to step 9

If not go to step 4

9. ???

10. Profit
