On Reddit, for instance, there are lots of posts in /r/science and /r/technology that are about new jet, rocket, and other space based innovations.

This should be implemented, the guy who does ISAmapsats should really take into consideration doing this, it's just an interesting idea.

But I agree with your premise. There are things that currently exist and things currently in testing that I would very much like to see in game. VASIMR comes to mind. Scram Jets come to mind as well.
