Mothership

Consider some of the mods - you can get a LV-N that has the power of half a dozen regular LV-Ns, fuel tanks that can hold as much as two or three regular tanks, etc using some of the big-name mods. This can save a lot of parts. You can also use the round batteries, and larger solar panels to cut down on part count.

Finally, when attaching modules to the mothership, bring them in and dock them with a tug rather than under their own power. Then, you can de-orbit the tug or whatever. That way, you don't have to put RCS tanks, ports, batteries, etc on every single module. This can save a lot on parts.

If you are careful and a little creative with the design, you can save 50% or more on parts.
